Brake Shoe Brands

I need new rear brake shoes.

what brands of shoes do you guys like. obviously want good performance, but i need this set of shoes to last.

Brake shoes are somewhat like tires. The softer shoe doesn't last, but usually gives better braking. A harder shoe will last, but gives less braking and is harder on the drum. Just like a softer tire will give more traction but less life.

I would not buy super expensive shoes for the rear to last a lifetime. More than likely you will have a wheel cylinder or wheel seal leak sometime in the future, and it will ruin them anyway.

I've always gone with the medium priced rear shoes, what the heck they last for a 100,000 miles. Rear does little braking with shoes, differrent with disc brakes with pads where they do more braking than shoes.

I run Raybestos Brutestops. Both front and rears. They work well for me.

I didnt used to get too hung up on rear shoes and worried more about the fronts alot like some others.... until on a trip out west I ended up kissing someones tail end after coming off a long hill EMPTY but my rears faded so bad I didnt have enough brakes to stop in time. Lesson learned. I now have the Wagnor severe duty carbon metallic shoes for commercial and emergency vehicles ( i.e.ambulance shoes ) They make suce a difference in how long I can go in between having to adjust the brakes it's not even funny. On the old shoes, when towing, I would have to crawl under every day and a half and start spinning star wheels. With these, 2 days of hard mountain towing and the brakes will not need adjusting

Just don't go cheap. I tossed a set of remanned shoes from Advance Auto and the damn lining delaminted on the right rear and locked it up while i had a trailer in tow. That was FUN.

Are the Wagners bonded or riveted? My luck with bonded shoes is not good, so I avoid them at all costs.

I dunno about the Wagners as i stay away from their products. I simply do not like their brake pads. Horrible pedal feel in the Town Car/Crown Vic fleet i take care of. Thats another company that i see alot of stuff coming out of India now.

I use mostly Motorcraft or Raybestos Professional grade brake stuff. Their shoes are riveted. The remanned shoes i got from advance were bonded. I was in a pinch to pick a car up across the state and needed new shoes and that was all they had in stock. Lesson learned, but that was on my first Ford diesel many years ago.

Raybestos service grade is mediocre. I wouldn;t use it.

I got them at Rock Auto, I'm sure they can be had at any other dealer that handles their line, but sometimes its hard to get local parts stores to be honest about what they are ordering for you , many times they will claim to be getting what you want but only be getting the stoutest thing that their distributer carries on the shelf and the box wont have anything but a part number on it. In cases like this you are usually best off ordering online where you know exactly what you are getting.

I used to swear by Bendix titaniumetallic pads and shoes but i cant get them anymore so i been using the wagner severe duty. I had to put new shoes on my gals ranger this week and went to napa this time and was pleased with what i got. The premium line of shoes are riveted and made in usa. From now im im gunna stick with them.
