Big Green Puddle

Went out to the truck today and found a big green puddle under it. Seems to be coming from the weep hole on the water pump. Just how hard is it to change one of these? It just leaked that one time so far but I am going to order another and keep my eye on it. Radiator is still full and it hasn't leaked again since that time. Guess that is my next project. Just put a radiator in it a couple weeks ago.

Hey Jason its not hard the only thing is to remember whereyou took the pumps out of the water pump and compare the new water pump with the old one and that they are the same thickness cause if the new water pump is thinner due to recoditioning the upper 2 bolts could be to long and hit the gear on the IP

I am probably going to just buy a brand new pump since the difference in price between a new and a reman is only $20.

still want to watch the bolts Jason just to be on the safe side wouldn't want to trash your whole motor cause a bolt that was to long got put in the wrong hole

And I can personally attest that it WILL ruin your IP! But then if it didn't, I wouldn't have gotten the deal I got on my trucks (and therefore not purchased them), I wouldn't own an IDI, I wouldn't have rebuilt the drive train from the ground up, wouldn't have spent untold hours on the firewall/clutch issues, dump bed, hoist etc. etc. etc...

I need to find that damn mechanic and throttle him!

Ok I will pay attention to that. So far it hasn't leaked again. I am keeping a watch on it but so far so good. Is there anything that would cause it to spit fluid out besides it just going bad? My experience has always been once they leak they just keep leaking. Dunno

Your water pump has given you its first warning. Time to change it.
All our Ford pumps died that way.

When one of mine went bad I wouls see coolant dripping from it after about 1 1/2 mile drive to the donut shop on my way to work. By the time I got to work 25 miles away it would hold pressure and not leak till the same time and place the next day. It went on and on till I really needed it to run hard and fast accross country so I changed it out. Make sure things are clean and some of the bolts enter the water jackets so just coat all of them with sealant and be done with it.... Except for those 2 top bolts. They can be real stinkers about length.

yep Jason thats the same way mine went out just a little hear and there then it started with a little more hear and you get the pic its on its way out

Well today it officially went out. Walked out to the truck and had a big puddle under it. About 2-3 gallons if I had to guess. So now I am driving my wifes car because the rear end is out in my other truck.

Well I attacked the water pump today and so far it is winning. Never done one these before so I am fighting it. Worked on it about 4 hrs and still haven't got the fan off the water pump. The main reason being I don't have the right tools for the job. Now I have torn the nut up on the fan and I don't know where to get a new one, plus I need to find the wrench that is made to get this thing off. On a positive note while I was in there I also found out that I am about ready for a power steering pump. Yey!

You do know the fan nut is left hand thread, I hope. It will loosen turning it towards the drivers side fender. That might be the reason its taking 4 hours to get it apart. :Sly
