about 10 years ago, i was told by one of the supposedly top IDI people that a factory lift pump will sustain a factory IDIT with a Bull moose IP, (roughly 90 cc's)

well... by my gloutious dyno, i found the mechanical fuel pump highly inadequate.
(33gph @ 6 psi max)

when under load my fuel pressure would drop to zero psi.
being new to this platform back then, i thought may be i got a weak lift pump.
i changed it a few times, to no avail.
finally swapped to a holley red (97 gph @ 7 psi)

fast forward a decade, and several built IDI's later,
i was halfway into my "bag" and came to the realization that most of the American engine manufacturers used the same design when it came to mechanical fuel pump mounting.

so me being a complete "IDIoit" i decided to jump on ole flea-bay and spend a few shiny inflated pennys and purchased a big block chevy mechanical rebuildable fuel pump.

i took a old IDI lift pump and beat it with my purse until the actuator arm fell out.
chucked up the new lift pump in the mill, until i could get a nice spot to drill to remove the pivot pin for the new actuator arm.
some grinding, some cutting, some smoking, and some welding...

i finally have a prototype 110 GPH 6 psi rebuildable mechanical lift pump!!!

now i need to build me a turbo idi hotrod so i can test it!!!

figured, this sunday morning was a good day to drop this on you like iran got dropped on!

not really a fan of the engagement of the actuator rod to the cam eccentric...
but i just may fire up fusion 360 and cut me some new arms.
but that wont be until after I get this one on a engine for testing.

Totally not needed. Your fuel pressure will be close to or at 0 when running high rps. Doesn’t mean it’s not getting fuel. All the gimmicks people. One up with to do things that serve no point amuse me. It’s the same as e pumps. Solutions looking for problems.

@IDIBOBS I think you're missing the point of the project. Its not because of why, more like why not? Let us have fun and experinent :peelout
i have no time for people and their lack of empathy.
ive done alot in my short time of owning IDI's
also have done alot for the IDI community as well.

the level of ignorance, and the ability for some to comprehend the rhetoric i spew is on par with the level of competence of the population today.

i would hate to be in his position :kick:

Well, I think it's pretty cool and dynamic. I like the idea of a mechanical pump instead of the electric pump myself.

The other part of this dynamic is that the newer mechanical pumps basically suck.....or don't suck, I should maybe say.... IDK. But if @IDIoit is making an arm that could be put into a BBC mechanical pump then we're who aren't hot rodding but need a better pump for WMO might have a new option to experiment with as well.

The only thing I can see wrong is that @IDIoit is already running chebby one wire alternators, now he's putting chebby fuel pumps on them, won't be long he'll be putting a SBC 350 in one of his creations assuring us that it's a Ford with funny shaped headers.....lol, just kidding.

I see good things happening with the fuel pump idea, really, good job YO!!!

Not sure what vehicle you put it on, but I've also read that the TSV is a restriction that needs to be overcome for the larger IPs. It would be cool to see what your creation could support with and without TSV - for those of us that like the range of having two tanks.

I am not an expert on auto mechanics, but have worked in heavy industry repair all my career. Worked on many types of pumps.
A pump that can be rebuilt sounds like something I would personally prefer if mine fails, even though I am happy with the stock performance of my idit.

I'm assuming that the GPM rating is at the rated rpm for the big block Chevy. So would be somewhat less on the IDI. But as these fuel pumps are a positive displacement type, it should not be hard to calculate an approximate flow rating for the rpm your IDI runs at.

I am looking forward to how your experiment works out.

id like to think that im not biased twards American auto makers.
ive built them all and love them all for different reasons.
altho out of my 28 vehicles, i only have 2 chevys. ones a 59 LS powered panel van, and the other is a 1930 4 door sedan with nawtccc power lol

everything i have is electric pumped, because when youre running 150 cc's of fuel a nd 32 psi, a mechanical pump is just too small.
but whatever. im a die hard hotrodder.

i delete the factory 2 tank system.

all 38 gallon single tanks in my rigs.
on my vehicles with 2 tanks i run mechanical ball valves.
pretty costly, but worth every penny

This would be good @hacked89 stuff. Maybe crash derby needs higher flow?
wouldnt be any good for that kind of application. from a flow standpoint.
crash derby stuff is low buck and minimalistic.
not to mention that they dont use long periods of load.

however, alternative fuels and the ability to rebuild them for cheap may be appealing.

not to mention that these are made in U.S.A. not usa

Yes
I bet you can have a conversation with it running
AND
get enough fuel not to trigger the dash light ( for those people that actually have a working lamp/sender) nice...
