Just saw something about this on the facebook group this AM. Had to jump on here to verify. I didnt know the man personally but all ive ever heard or read about him was nothing but positive. Losing an individual of his gumption and character is a real blow to the community.

The air-cooled VW community is similar, if not worse. The few remaining people with the very old knowledge are typically over 80 years old now. But it's also far more well documented than IDIs, so that makes up for it somewhat. But also I'm constantly seeing people saying incorrect things because they never looked into it and just assumed.
It is sad about Russ.

Concerning old VWs, you don't need a forum, all you need is a copy of that book "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive Forever"(it's something like that). That book is super easy to follow and probably as entertaining as a YouTube video.

I have a physical copy and it's awful to try to read. Too much useless chatter and slang that was already fairly outdated 50 years ago. For exactly, he says "bread" instead of "money". It's a product of it's time. It was probably excellent in 1970, but it's quaint and inferior now, with so much info you can search online, in less time than it takes to flip through the book.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Just saw something about this on the facebook group this AM.
I had missed about us loosing Russ and this really hurts me!!!! That man has helped me SOOOOO Much thru the years on my IDI's!!!! He'll be missed indeed!!

He has been on FB a lot and I imagine I would have seen something about his loss over there.
But about 3-4 weeks ago I got locked out of FB cause it got hacked and I FLAT CAN'T GET BACK IN.....Can't unlock it, can't reset anything, can't nothing!!!!!!
Closest I can come to resetting FB things is that I'm asked to follow instructions and answer 5 questions.......2-3-4 places in instructions there was some sort on Chinese emblems orsome sort of funny looking little curly-cues!
1. My Current Drivers License
2. Pass Port ID Number
3. My Birth certificate number.
4. My.....??????
5. My......????
Anyway I chickened out & Ain't got no FACEBOOK currently!

Again I really hated to find out about Russ's passing!!!!!!!

Off the subject, but THIS is probably the real hack. You did the right thing by NOT giving your info.
Unfortunately this is actually very accurate for how Facebook wants to recover accounts because account theft is very high. Can do a lot of damage to someone. Thats why I just dont use it except the classifieds and keep my online identity as anonymous as possible...

I’ve been running into unhosted/dead links and other incomplete IDI info a lot lately, so I’ve been buying a lot more IDI print literature.

No Crystal balls here but one day there may only be print copies left on niche topics like these once it becomes unprofitable to host the information.

I am never good on topics like this...but...the above represents what I can pull together on my own feelings the best I can...

I would like to say that I visited his website a few times and I was very impressed and I learned a lot of things because of it. I am thankful to have been steered in his direction by you guys and the knowledge I picked up because of it.

Like any virtuoso like Russ, not having him around any more is a great loss to us all, IDI folks and anyone that came in contact with him on any level...the picture that was posted of him says a lot about how he approached life...full of vim, vigor, and caring for his fellow man.

I feel that we are all diminished with his passing...he must have been a really good guy...I am very sorry to hear about it and will remember that he must have touched a lot of people in a positive way.

Happy trails, Russ...wherever you go...give 'em all an education...

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Hold your loved ones closer.
I used to watch other folks loosing their loved ones and try to feel for them. I wanted to, yet really couldn't.

YES HOLD YOUR LOVED ONES CLOSE......EVERY CHANCE YOU GET!!!!

3 1/2 years ago we lost our 42 yr old son.........Just like a slug in the gut, I/we were beat to the ground! Instantly! I couldn't breath for days, stupid, couldn't function, wanting to die myself to go be with John! I was a zombie for nearly a year!
Only a week earlier he had come 450 mi to visit us and I had watched him drive off that night, never to see him again alive!!!

I now can nearly imagine, nearly can feel how all of Russ's family are feeling!!! And I do in fact already miss Russ! He was a true friend to me!!!

So hold them every chance you get, may be last time you gat a chance to!!

It`s sad to read of the loss of one of our Forum members, even long time members that have been on the Forum many years, decide to sell their IDI and move on to other things.
All their knowledge to share is suddenly gone.

The biggest loss is to their family, Wife, Kids, Grand Children etc..
a hole that cannot be filled.
A few years back Russ lost his Daughter from Cancer, that hit him hard. She lived back east, and he had to make several trips to her.
He was just a regular guy like any one of us.

Might have been 15? years ago, I think it was him I met at PNP in Sherwood, Or. It was long before I got into the world of Ford IDI`s.
Was out there in our 85 300D Mercedes, and were visiting our daughter in Tigard, Or.
He drove off in his Ford PU, and thought I would like to meet this
guy again.

I ordered a Clutch Line and new Fly Wheel bolts a year ago for
the Clutch replacement I did about a year ago. Last time was
any contact with him.
Was thinking this past week of ordering them for my 85....

As it says in the book of John, each any every one of us has to
accept or reject Jesus as our Lord and Savior, mentioned other
places through the testament.
It`s our owners Manual, and Basic Instructions Before Leaving
Earth. I hope he made the right decision.
Lord Jesus give his family the strength they need to move on.

Sad to hear. My condolences to Russ’ family.

Over the years I’ve ordered a few parts from Russ and sent him a few camshafts I had pulled from scrapped motors. His insights and care for the IDI community will be sorely missed.

Also just saw this. He went out of his way to get me an injector once when I went to my first idi rally in Bedford. Had one leaking at the threads internally a week before the rally. Sent him a video of it to verify because that's not super common and 2 days later I had a new one. I didn't even pay him yet and was confused why I had a part in the mail. He just said to send him the leaking one and he'd fix it for the next guy. Damn. Condolences to the family.
