You have two options, neither are good. Fuel or coolant. Drain your oil see what comes out.
If it's coolant, you'll have what looks like a milkshake. Fuel will probably keep your oil black.
It’s also getting 6 mpg, don’t know if that has anything to do with it
It most likely does.
So the oil is black as can be so I’m leaning towards the head gasket being good, doesn’t smell like oil though
There's your clue. It's not coolant.
Did you drain the oil yet? Just because there is water in the oil doesnt mean it has mixed up yet.
Except for the fact that he was driving while he started having issues so it would be mixed.
Dylan. The black, overfilled oil means that there's fuel in it. That sure could explain your poor mileage. The fuel will thin out the oil so your lifters may not be working right which would explain the valve noise. The thin oil also explains your lack of oil pressure. It's probably your lift pump. You need to change that. You also need to change your oil. I would plan to do 2 oil changes. I would only drive a few miles (less than 50) before the second oil change. That short oil change interval will get the rest of the fuel out of the oil. You won't be able to get all of it out of, say, your lifters otherwise. Hopefully, you didn't drive far enough to damage the internals. You won't know that without tearing the engine apart and looking at the bearings. At that point, you might as well do at least an overhaul so I wouldn't worry about looking at your bearings. Just keep possible damage in mind. On the plus side, you will have a VERY clean engine, internally.
