I think that’s how it’s supposed to be, I think it only were to close in a “run away” type of situation, with a lot of vacuum on the flat side.
Ok. The diaphragm seems to close and hold if i blow through the pinhole but not through either of the big holes. It just flows straight through. I know its pretty simple design but just wasn't 100% sure how it's supposed to operate normally. I can't really seem to find consistent tests on the forums and such. Everyone seems to do it differently or contradict each other lol

Your CDR is operating the way it is intended to.

The pin hole did seem to be plugged before cleaning it. I'll just wait for it to dry and see if it seems to make any difference

Very good. Its all clean now. I just checked my tubo and it doesn't have any play out of the normal and the compressor side looks surprisingly clean as well. So that's good

also the gromet for the cdr valve isn't terrible but it's pretty stiff with a little flexibility. Do you think this should seal? It looked like the PO put red rtv around it for a better seal. Should I do the same or just check the auto parts store for something that'll fit?

Only place ive found to get that gromet is to get a CDR reseal kit, they are relatively cheap.

I have also used high temp silicone on one before with good results. Just hit it with a little brake clean to get the surface oil off then glue er on

It should seal. The grommet for my CDR was very stiff but when I bolted on the new CDR valve everything sealed up fine--no RTV needed. In a pinch I've made gaskets from a bulk sheet of EPDM rubber.

Hi everyone, I just bought my first idi last week. It's got the newer gen sidewinder on it. After it sat in my driveway for about a week I noticed some oil leak coming from what looked to be either the rear main seal and the oil pan as well as maybe the little drain tube between the transmission belhousing and engine. I degreased and washed the whole engine bay and undercarriage today to try to pin point the leaks better. After washing it and letting it dry I took it for a drive and when I got back I looked underneath and saw small oil droplets dripping from that drain tube area as well as some coming down the passenger side of the oil pan and rear main area. I popped the hood and noticed seepage around where the intake hat mounts on the manifold. I had my cousin look at it while I revved it up and put it under a couple lbs of boost and he instantly said he could see oil bubbling out of where the hat seals on the intake. Is it normal for oil to be in there and maybe the intake hat seal is bad? Or could it be a leaky turbo seal or bad cdr valve?

I'm fairly new to these idi's, and ive been searching around this forum for a bit so decided to make an account for stuff like this, so any help is appreciated!
Another thing to check for excess blowby (that will cause oil buildup in the CDR and intake) is to remove the oil fill cap and run the engine and see if you have a ton of smoky oil blowby coming out of it. It should be fairly light if any. I know some people run trucks that look like they are rolling coal out that cap but a motor like that is in serious need of a rebuild. Mine has barely any when started and none after it warms up.

It does have a fair bit. But not like it's rolling coal. There's a little bit of smoke at idle out of the cap.

That's perfectly normal. These engine are designed with large ring gaps so they do have a lot of blowby compared to other engines. People who are inexperienced with these engine see the blowby and think that the engine is ready for an overhaul even though it's not.
