4.10 to 3.55 swap?

im thinking about swaping out the 4.10 gears in my crew cab to 3.55 and i was wondering if anyone had an esinmate on how much low end power loss i would see?

I wouldn't do it. I've owned an idi with both 3:55s and 4:10s and I loved the 4:10s and hated the 3:55s. That's just my opinion

you're gonna get different opinions from diffrent people who use their trucks differently and with different setups. My truck HAD 3.55's but it was a gas c6 truck origionally and the dana 60 front axle i got has 4.10's so i swapped the donor rear axle in too. I like the 4.10's much more but i'm on 35's gonna be on 37's soon.

3:55 = Good for driving on the interstate, and cruising around.

4:10 = Good for towing/pulling heavy loads.


Which one do you do most?

Man I hated my 3.55's. Combined with a worn out N/A 6.9 it really disliked pulling any grade in higher altitude. On the flip side I don't think I would have liked 4.10 and no overdrive either LOL Either way I'd make sure you have an overdrive trans before you go the route of a gear swap. I have 4.10's behind a ZF5 and 255/85 tires and I think it is geared just right.

If you do the swap just find replacement axles they are much cheaper than buying and setting up gears ;Sweet

mostly highway and crusing around but i do pull my mud truck and an excavator from time to time

I had 4:10 and switched to 3:55's and like those much better. My fuel mileage incresed from maybe 13-14 to 17-18mpg. I still tow my trencher around and it weighs around 6500lbs plus trailer weight. So I did not lose alot in towing for what i do but I have no mountains either. I have a 5 speed and a only running 33" tires so that is a factor too if you have bigger tires. Its all in what you want, more towing capabilities or lower rpms at cruising speed.

I switched to 3.55s in my 94, lost some pulling power but so much nicer to drive. Then I installed a Moose Pump;Sweet, it felt like a 4.10 truck again and then some!!! I hope to be adding an intercooler soon, so It should be even better;Sweet

I have a cc Dually with a N/A 6.9 with a T-19. The 4.10 pinion gear decided to let loose (common with short Pinion) So I installed a new set of 3.55's, all I can say is,it was the best thing I could have done. The Truck drives so much nicer now! I have an S-47 with the 5.08 1st gear I plan in installing. I Tow a 28 ft in closed car trailer,about 15k. I plan on a Turbo and if I can find a Browning,I will be set for anything! I will never go back to 4.10's again. Just me.

My $.02. I have towed heavy with both gears. The only time you will miss the 4.10s is with a heavy load starting out on a hill with the zf. I usually use low range to get myself going in that situation. Otherwise you don't notice the difference unless you put alot of stock in what gear you are in. I do gear down more with 3.55s, but my speed is the same.
