Does anybody know the scale of the gauge?

Friend of mine, his trans temp gauge never moves as long as he goes over the pass at a decent (3rd with converter locked) speed. If he slows down enough that he has to use 2nd (even at 2500rpm with no converter lock) the gauge goes to hot very quickly. probably only takes a couple of minutes from normal temp to get to the red

this is pulling about 7k

It also seems to cool back down pretty quick, takes about 5 minutes to come back to normal.

It was kind of funny riding with him, because we were going kinda slow over the pass when he noticed the trans temp almost to the red, so he floors it and gets some speed up to where it gets 3rd gear and locked and the temp comes back down.

That would be about right. Higher RPM, tranny pumps more oil thru cooler, fan clutch locks up blows more air.
3rd gear, trans is locked in direct drive, 2nd gear, TC slip creats heat.

There's a reason why the factory trans temp gauge does not have a scale on it. It's notoriously inaccurate. It will go to HOT, but then it's usually too late. Many people ask us why they should buy a 3-gauge kit, with pyro (EGT), Turbo Boost, and Trans Temp when they already have a trans temp. This is the answer. The factory TT gauge is rely not good enough to rely on, especially if you are towing.
