I just purchased this truck it has a reman 7.3 with a new ATS Turbo that all was done in 2000 and only 30,000 miles on since all the work. It came with all the Ford manuals chasis and engine for 1987. I can not find a 7.3 listed as a motor for this truck. It also does not list a 5 speed available for it. It has a 4.10 Dana rear and the F350 rear springs. Truck is fairly clean and only has 124,000 total miles. It does need ball joints and has the 3850 # front axle but has 4.10 gears. Which lower ball joint does it take in the moog line? the 8195T is for a 3850 # axle except 4.10 ratio, the #8435 is for the 4600# axle? I found nothing listed for a 3850 axle with 4.10 ratio? Anyone here run into this problem with the lower ball joint? I do not want to tear it apart and have the wrong part. Any ideas if this could have came with a ZF 5 speed?

You must have some whacky manuals there. The Ford service manuals are made by Helm, and come in a set. There are usually about 5 books to the set. All the ones I've seen cover all versions of the IDI, and the ZF transmission is certainly included. Yes, your truck did come with the ZF-5. As for ball joints, I go to the Ford dealer. You should get the right ones there.

The manuals are Ford Shop manuals dated September 1986 for 1987 Ford Light Truck. I do not see Helm anywhere only Ford Training and Publications Department with Ford Logo, the 4 speed and C6 automatic are the only transmission listed. Also the only motor listed is a 6.9 diesel.

Very interesting. Are you sure its a 87? If it is, the truck might have been built in 87 (early), but the motor (could be a 6.9) was built in late 86. Just a thought. Cause my truck is a 85, but my motor was built in 84 (November I believe).

Look on the passenger side valve cover at the engine tag, and see if it says displacement 420ci 6.9, or 444ci 7.3, it should tell you those on it, also the power rating of the motor (regular, or high altitude)

I know the motor is a 7.3 Reman that was installed with a New ATS Turbo System in 2000. I just was suprised to see only the 6.9 listed in the manual and no 5 speed for 1987, but the manual was printed September 1986, might be the reason for this. It does have the Dana Rear from the axle code 35. The truck code fore the trans states 5 maybe means 5 speed? but is not in the chart of available transmissions. It was a late build date of 08/87 so maybe it came with the 5 speed.

In '86 there was only the 6.9 IDI and the C6 and T19 trannies. That's why you don't see the ZF5 of 7.3 in your manual. The 1st year for the 7.3 IDI was the 1988 model year. Ford switched from the Dana 70 rear axle over to the Sterling/Ford 10.25 in 85 if I remember correctly. I have "Sutton Reman" 7.3 in my '86, the 6.9 was toasted.

I had a 87 and the only diesel motor offered was a 6.9, that being said and the fact it has a reman motor, the truck very well could have a 7.3 with the ZF5. If it has a overdrive posistion on the stick then the ZF was installed and the T19 was replaced.

I do not want to go with Ford balljoints as they have are not greaseable and Moog does not seem to list any for my truck at 2 different parts stores Carquest and PartsTrain online. I have a 3850 pound front axle and 4.10 ratio Moog lists the lower for that but states except 4.10 ratio but does not list one for that application. I can not be the only one to ever had this combination, any Ideas.

i think those ball joints should work. the dana 44 and 44hd have the same ball joints. you should have a dana 44hd. my 89 f250 has the dana44hd with 4.10 gears and i had a set of ball joints sitting around from my old trk (78 bronco) they worked just fine. i called the parts store and they had the same part number. as long as its a dana 44, all dana 44 ball joints should work. the bronco had 3.55 gears so i dont know why there stating a differance
nothing to it but to do it

Agreed. OK then, he just has an older manual. Actually the 87' 6.9's are some of the most desireable, as they did put the ZF behind them, and they had a lot of the 7.3 features such as the 7.3 glow plugs and serp belt.
