have a question should I use the 2 gaskets for the timing cover or just use RTV? Or a combination of both? I did not use the gasket for the rear main I just used RTV and did not have any issues

This is a personal choice I suppose....most often its about surface prep more than this or that product.

So personally I am NOT a fan of RTV in place of a gasket....

I do however like elephant snot amd a gasket...aka permatex form a gasket is elephant snot

All rtv amd gasket makers have a place....amd time to use...if there is a gasket from factory I use elephant snot w it....never do I use rtv amd a gasket...they seem from my exp...incompatible....

I have and do use rtv alone though....

Albeit all sealing has to be done better than surgically clean or it wont seal....IMHO

Can you share a picture of the timing cover gasket(s)? I've got an engine builder kit, and I don't think it came with the timing cover gasket. I was assuming I needed to use RTV, but now I'm thinking maybe I don't know what the gasket looks like.

Combo.... I never trust sealer alone. Very light coat of it on both sides of the gaskets, let it tack up a few minutes assemble and wait till it cures before doing anything with it...

When I rebuilt my 7.3, I used RTV + the gaskets for everything especially the front cover mating surfaces. Double insurance. I'd hate to have crankcase oil and coolant mixing due to RTV or gasket alone.

Funny fact, the only surface that I didn't used RTV+gasket was the t-stat housing, and it leaked immediately. I pulled it apart and used RTV+gasket and it's been fine for weeks. After that, I don't trust the gasket alone.

RTV can be "slippery" so you have to watch the gasket isn't displaced during assembly and tightening. Using too much can make strings fall off the inside and plug things that shouldn't be. And it's a bear to clean off at disassembly (if you applied it correctly to a surgically/chemically clean machined surface).

I tend to favor Permatex High-Tack gasket sealant, a thin coat on one side of the gasket. Which helps stick it in place as well as provide additional sealing. On the other hand, I have built entire engines with no gaskets (except the head), just the right flavor of sealants, and they didn't leak either :dunno

X 2!

I have used Permatex ultra copper on those gaskets. Again, very thin coat on both surfaces. Brake Kleen the block and cover junction until there is no more oil residue.
