I'll try steel wool, definitely wouldn't feel comfortable hitting it with a wire wheel lol.

I might suggest using the maroon scotchbrite pads (hand pads not cookies on a die grinder!) rather than steel wool, and using motor oil or penetrating oil as a lubricant. Then vacuum the crap out of the cylinder with the shop vac when done. With the heads off, you could also soak your rings packs with penetrating oil while you are waiting on the heads to come back. I used Kroil. It may loosen up the carbon in the rings or it may not, but it makes you feel good thinking you might be doing something useful. Obviously, that penetrating oil is going to make its way to the crankcase so you will need to have fresh oil in there before you fire it up again.

I'll hold off on cleaning it until I get to town and can pick some up. Are we talking the general purpose scrubbers you can get at like walmart? I've never used them.

Walmart may have them, but I get them at the hardware store. They are actually made for sanding rather scrubbing dishes. You can get them in different colors, which are also different grades of the abrasive embedded in them. The "fuzz"
that comes off these when cleaning will be easier to vacuum up than steel wool bits.

I tried lowes, home depot, walmart and HF. No one had them. So looks like I will have to use the steel wool and just be sure I get it all out. :(

I noticed the local Walmart has these in the automotive section, in the area of the automotive paint supplies. If you have an Ace Hardware store around, they should have it.

I actually checked in the sand paper section of walmart on my way out and didn't see it. The paint was on the opposite wall, wonder if I missed it..ugh

I finally found some at ace. I have to do an unexpected remodel of the bathroom so the truck will be on hold for a week or so. Also, I got the chaser today, Thanks Todd !

Great! Glad to hear the chaser got there okay. Sounds like you are all set to get busy on the truck - after the bathroom remodel. That is kind of funny - I am in the process of remodeling my bathroom too.

Well I was glad to see the push rods still had copper on them.. Unfortunately one is bent. The block is cleaned and ready for heads, just waiting on the other head.

Does anyone have a source for factory push rods? Or would Melling be fine?

Finally had time to work on it today. Got a head on then had to stop. Bolts should be 100 lbs right? I read a thread on here that says to do 110 but all of my other information says 100..
