DO NOT GRIND OFF THE HEADS
there is an internal shoulder that does NOT fall through the hole.
in short, you will **** yourself silly.
I tack weld the bolt heads to the bed instead. then I can get happy with the impact :D

Those threads are tough. You have to pick straight up anyway. Don't forget to take the screws out of the fill tubes at the fuel doors. Caps off, push fill tubes to bottom of bed out of the way & caps back on. Rear lighting should have 1 maybe 2 plugs to disconnect. May also be an extra ground back there.

I have used an angle grinder with cutoff wheel to cut a slot(flat-blade style) into the heads and then used a piece of metal like a "screwdriver" to hold it. Often with a vice-grip for leverage.

If it's too rusty for that to work, you can weld a "bar" piece of metal to the head. Position it against something so it won't spin, weld it solid, remove nut. At this point, replace the bolt.

convert to super duty style when re-installing
This^^^^^

Clip the nuts on and you can install from inside the bed with the electric impact. Come off easy too.

Calvin has a point about the bolts making it easier to reinstall especially if you’ve got the thing hanging on a chain and don’t want to smash it into the back of the cab. Just ease it forward until they drop in.

I’ve done both numerous times.

Got a wire welder? If you do. lay a 1/2 inch black iron nut on the head of the bed bolt [top side of bed] and hold the nut in place with a pair of pliers. Insert the wire welder cup into the nut and fire off a weld good enough to bond the nut to the round head of the bolt. NOW, you have something you can put a wrench on and break loose the nuts on the bottom... With those nuts off... grab the nuts you just welded on with vice grips and pull the bolts out of the bed.

Grab the bed at the back and lift it a little and drag it back away from the cab. Then, tie nylon straps through each corner pocket to a center point. Use your engine hoist to lift the bed off the truck. Set saw horses under the bed, let it down. and Bob's yer Uncle for as long as you want to have the bed off..

One oneman job. Done it a bunch of times. pop the tail gate off first... whole deal shouldn't take you more than 30 min.

Throw those bolts in scrap and replace them with Superduty style... You will be glad you did. Under bed work becomes like lifting the hood.

What does converting to SD entail?
SD has "nut clips" that go on the frame and wont spin, until they rust away.
and bolts that go in from the top.
instead of nuts from the bottom
