Yeah... that's not normal. i'll check length on a 'good' motor as soon as I can.

Apple's to apples, better use the same size Allan wrench. Lol
Though, shoving stuff down the hole means absolutely nothing.

I've run IDIs so retarded that they were smoking at idle, and ones so advanced it had no power at all, clattering like mad(both extreme cases involved with adjustments to get it right).
Ones with majorly leaking injectors, to the point that it doesn't fire on that cylinder for a while due to the line needing to be refilled...

I've *never* seen glow plugs destroyed like that.

If that was after 10K miles, I could see it being from timing... this is... something else. Something's majorly wrong, that's obvious.

One thought here - OP, can you measure a new glow plug? I'm curious what the glow plug length would be measured from the same spot on the engine(AKA, how much further the allen wrench goes below the glow plug tip before it stops.

I can definitely measure a glow plug and then check the depth again. I would also like to see what the difference is.

But it's not like I'm screwing the glow plug in and it breaks. As you saw I drove the truck around the block (a country block, so maybe 10 minutes max), and it survived albeit it looked like it was on its way out. Then I drove around the block again, and it was destroyed.

When I pulled the glow plugs out of this rebuilt motor they were perfectly fine. I only swapped in another set of the same brand glow plug, Motorcraft, because I knew mine were brand new.

I feel like the only thing that I've changed is the injection pump. But I don't know how a bad injection pump could ruin glow plugs like this.

It's obvious the glow plug is getting /really/ Hot.
It's melting the tip off, which makes me wonder how.

When you went around the block, did it smoke at all? If so, how much and what color?

So, you still have not checked the timing?
Correct. The local mechanic will do it by ear. So I'm still working on finding someone that can do it with a correct tool.

I'm just doing those things that I can do right now. I'm not sure what's going on of course, so I'm working under the assumption that neither too much timing or not enough timing would ruin the plugs to this way.

Yes. Plenty of smoke. And it was Gray. Coming off the line it's black.

I'm going to measure the plugs like discussed above, but I think I'm going to have to install the injection pump that came with this engine. I don't know how the Moose pump could ruin these plugs when it was doing so well on the 7.3.

Could a engine ran out of oil cause damage to the injection pump?

If you say so.

I really dont.

But I feel like I'm sitting on my hands right now. I want to try whatever I can until I can either get my hands on the correct tools to time it, or contact someone who can.

Just a horrible thought, but is there any way to shove a piece of wire down the glow plug hole, make sure the precup is in place? You said the engine has been rebuilt, right? And it's had this issue the whole time...
Hm, I wonder if one of those cheapo eBay/Amazon USB borescopes would fit in either the injector or GP bore.....

Excellent idea. I'll look at that. Even renting one.

I happen to have one of those cheapy borescopes. Paid $5 for it and the picture quality isn’t half bad. Anyhow, I just measured the borescope against an injector nozzle for you, and the borescope is 0.010” bigger in diameter than the nozzle. I’m not sure what the hole in the bottom of the injector bore measures, but judging by the imprint on a used copper sealing washer, you just might be able to stick the camera in there.
