It's happening on all the cylinders. I burned up a complete set and then replaced them thinking that I overused my push button glow plug bypass. But then decided to unplug the entire harness and drive it like that for a little while. Then discovered that I burned up that set as well. These are all Motorcraft plugs. That's when I started putting one plug in at a time and adjusting timing. I burned up three plugs doing this little experiment.
To double check, a 'burned up' plug won't get hot when hooked to 12V, right?

Any chance you could get a picture of one? I'm curious as to what it looks like.
Absolutely. I'll post it tomorrow.

I showed the plug to the above mentioned mechanic, and he says it's not "burned up" but broke off.

He says that something is coming in contact with it.

I don't know what it could be. I don't understand all the clearance stuff.

I keep thinking that a clearance issue would be impossible with the pre chamber. But I know enough to know that I don't know poop about this engine.

o_O But... glow plugs can't get hit by anything in the prechamber...If he's really been working on these engines for years then I'm sure he has some knowledge but at the same time, I can't follow his logic on that one.

I did have a bad controller in mine once (1986 uses a less reliable style). The glow plug tips did not burn off, but instead ruptured slightly on the sides, and allowed internal pressure to escape without swelling the tip. The tips also did not fall off because of this. Wishing I took photos at the time...

Page 13 of this Beru article shows some examples of failed glow plugs and some of the reasons behind it. I'm really curious what yours look like.

Thank you for the pictures.

I'm posting a photo of one of the glow plugs. It was brand new before it was installed.

It definitely looks like breakage to me. And the photos you posted had some reasons why this could happen.

I wonder if I somehow ruined my injectors when I burned up my last 7.3 motor. Because I'm using the same injectors on this rebuilt 6.9 liter.

I'm going to swap out injectors and time it the best I can, and then install single glow plug and see what happens.

What fuel are you using.....just out of curiosity....

Fuel and timing are really the only 2 things that can burn out gp....nothing else has anything to do with combustion....

Just saying....talking to a Diesel mechanic does nothing compared to the vast knowledge base and wealth of applied history here.

ONLY FUEL OR TIMING....

Just a horrible thought, but is there any way to shove a piece of wire down the glow plug hole, make sure the precup is in place? You said the engine has been rebuilt, right? And it's had this issue the whole time...

That is pretty horrible. Lol. But I can do that for sure.

The engine was ran a few times on the engine holder. But probably not for very long or under any load, of course. I installed the injectors that the motor came with, and will drive the truck tomorrow to see what happens.

The gp guide above says something about dripping nozzles or fuel jet profile. I'm thinking maybe I ruined my injectors when I burned up my motor. But I'm not holding out much hope

On a lighter note, I finally finished my sub box install. LOL

I've been using diesel fuel from my friends farm. But it's not off road fuel. It's clear fuel. And a Chevron truck delivers it. But I've been using the fuel for well over a year now. I didn't have these issues before this motor

So, went around the block with my spare set of injectors. The last time I drove the short of a distance the glow plug was damaged This time the glow plug is still intact but doesn't look quite right to me. It looks like it was on its way out.

I put a narrow allen wrench down the glow plug hole. I felt it bottom out after around 3 in. See photo my fingers are at or around the spot the plug was sticking out

I don't know how deep that whole should be.
