Why not go with a hopped up 4bt? :dunno
Because with what I am doing the motor vehicle law requires the swap in diesel to be from the same class and weight of truck. So no 4bt and I don't want my truck to sound like a backhoe. or I would just install a 6v53

That is not original equipment, only auxiliary trans ive seen is behind big Cummins in an 80s era rig. I would simplify the drivetrain if you are doing the swap and just go with an n4500 or a zf5. It’s unique but I could see driveline vibrations in your future with that setup.

Hi ,ZF5s are 100% garbage The spicer is out of 73 KW 900 kenworth that had 400 big cam in it.
And no,It dosen't vibrate one bit at 80 and pulls my 16,000 lbs 44 ft race trailer like it isn't there.I do this for a living.
Chris
P.s I don't think you fellas quite know what and auxiliary is: 4speed LL=2.14,L=1.14,D=1.1,OD-0.86 . I can split all of the gears in the front trans 4 times inbetween shifting the front trans. and I have 4 gears in reverse. I can all so compound all the forward gears to a low gear of 13.75 to one. Your nv 4500 is also junk compared to this:)

Since you do this for a living why do you think a zf5 is garbage? I own 4 zf5 equipped trucks and only thing I’ve seen break them is operator error and mistreatment, but maybe you can fill me in on how you broke yours.

My spicer is rated at 73,000 lbs and has 2.5 input and out shafts It will never brake in this setup.I have never personaly broken any zfs because I refuse to ever own any,but I have rebuilt quite a few.Driven normally like they should be they are fine, But hauling fast and heavy I put all of my faith in cast iron.I can also tow loaded in overdrive. Friends again?

Hi again, just to put a period on my original question,I found a company(wildhorse mfg) that makes a steel cummins to zf5 adaptor that is 3/4'' thick that will work giving me 38 3/8'' engine and adapter. That I can for sure make that work. Once again thanks for the numbers and spirited conversions.

So you’re bashing the zf5 that you’ve never run but you’re buying a $600 adapter for a zf5? Um okay...

Sure they are complicated to rebuild but otherwise I’ve had no other issues, our 96 pulls 18k in overdrive no issues, biggest thing with these trans other than proper operation is keeping the trans fluid clean and using the correct atf.

As far as putting the zf in your truck I’m pretty sure you will have to move the shifter panel, but it’s been awhile since I took the measurements in our 72. Probably be spaced different with the 5.9 in there tho

What do you have planned for shift linkage? Are you going I convert to mechanical or stick with a hydraulic slave setup? Be curious which way you go, I’ve seen both ways done in these trucks but it seems the firewall needs reinforcing

Hi again ,NO I am NOT using a Zf5(still junk;)The adapter is for a ZF5.I have the aluminum bell from a T19 that ford used behind the 6.9idi.That is what ford used before the Zf and it uses the same external hydraulic set up the later ones do,but it bolts to the old style 4 speed. It shares all of the same dimensions as to depth, size of clutch and can fit up to a 13'' disc.I said I am not changing the drive train.

As far as the clutch operation I might adapt the stock linkage or I saw a slick set up on the ford truck forum that does away with all the brace the firewall nonsense.I just might steal the idea below

Thanks for that tidbit. I have an extra ZF5 I want to use behind a 6BT.

The adapter plate thicknesses vary so much. Dodge ones are about 1.25" (1stgen) or 2.25" (2ndgen).

I am not sure where you came up with this ... Our adapters are 3/4" for the zf6 and 1.125" for the Zf5 , This is proper to clear a dual disk clutch if one desires to .
