Best starter?

First, any differences between auto and manual starters?

What is better or do you guys prefer, planetary reduction or offset gear reduction? Any particular brand or model#?

I've used DBElectric for a BBC marine starter, 10si alternator and a 3g alt. The 3g failed and they wanted to receive failed alt before shipping replacement, so I bought a 130 amp 3g locally at greater cost and sent the failed back. Gave the DB 3g to a friend for half price and though they replaced it they could have done me right and shipped one immediately rather than cost me more money by taking a few weeks. Not sure I want to chance paying twice again but will consider them. I'd rather pay more for quality and longevity, so what is out there that's good quality?

Many threads on this. Same auto or manual. ANY electric parts are a crap shoot nowadays. That said I like the 4kw from db. Half a dozen in service, no issues. Keep in mind bad batteries kill any brand of starter.

Batteries are 1 yr old group 31s from NAPA. Alternator is 130 amp 3g with new 4ga wiring and such. Will be doing a hardwired battery maintainer and nifty plug in bumper for that and block heater. Considering heated battery blankets as well because I'm OCD like that. Any starter I get should have about the best odds possible of living.

That reminds me I need to change my battery cable fluid since it's getting cold over here. Summer blend freezes
Probably should fill tires with winter air while I'm at it.

marine and high comp gassers love em.
got one for my 7.3, we will see how it does.

I have no issues with the Mitsu one. Higher CCA batteries would be best for me. I see you ahve the group 31s. what is the CCA and reserve capacity on them? I got some costco stock replacement units, 850 CCA i think, would really like 1000 though, but those were 2x the money.

Been using lots of the nippondenso style with zero problems.. and no intermittent grind.

Batteries are 950 CCA. Just ordered the Powermaster 9050 from Jegs. Advertise +35 ft/lbs over stock and Made in USA. Good enough.

The Powermaster 9050 is awesome. Just threw it in. I appreciate the smaller size, that the top bolt is easier to get to, and terminals on the bottom for nice easy wire attachment and routing. The gear housing is more compact being an offset gear. The motor itself is about the same length but slightly larger in diameter. Had block heater plugged in so there was at least a little warmth around my hands while working. Didn't hit the glow plugs and just cranked it for a second to see how fast she spun, I'll be damned I think the truck rocked a bit from the starter alone and she fired right up.

Starter was a bit pricey at just under $200 from Jegs to my door but worth every penny for how fast she spins and Made in USA.

You should give us a long term update in 6 months or a year. Would be good sticky material as well!

I have had the Powermaster 9050 starter in my truck for over three years now and it still works great!
