how many people have blown head gaskets with studs?

With the tight tolerance on those phuzions i wonder if head bolts would even work at all :dunno

IIRC Flatlanders decompressed studded 6.9 with the compound setup did.
But may have been due to installers using too much lube on the the stud threads when DPS performance built it and hydro locked the studs not allowing them to fully seat in the block.:dunno

Well as most probably know, mine only lasted a few thousand miles, and by a few thousand I mean less than 3. I can't remember now how many miles I had on that engine when the head gasket went. I properly broke in the studs and cleaned the block threads and everything so its not the studs fault for the HG failing in my case.

Too much lube causing the studs to be improperly installed.. What kind of a child with some tools did that... Maybe the same kind that runs hot water thru the engine oil system attempting to "flush out" the dirt.... Ron thats incrediable thinking about that much stud lube.... Makes me think about horse breeding....:D

I used a nice HKS gasket on mine that has some sort of rubber impregnated areas around the water and oil passages, and a compression style ring around the combustion chamber

Ryan

I'll blame it on the OMG (Old Man Glasses). didn't read this part before. Are your HKS gaskets MLS? If so you may have already have the first step of what we are looking for.[/QUOTE]

The HKS gasket I was referring to is installed on my Toyota Supra- Not my IDI. Yes, it is a MLS gasket.

Was the deck flatness in tolerance?

Also, I would be willing to definitely donate $35 for sure but $100 might be hard to swing with my wife... LOL

For comparison, O-ringing a BBC costs about $900, because they make you deck the block and then they do the oringing process which is also really expensive. In comparison, $600 to $900+, I'd go with the Phuzions if we can get them made.

Is BBC anither name for the C-ring? Also would you have to have the engine completely torn apart to intall the C-ring? And can you deck the block while it is in the truck if you can get the heads off? I'm not sure but I have a 3" body lift and I wonder if I might be able to get the heads off and then hopefully get the block decked and then install studs the right way if there is room. Is this possible with the body lift?

Also, I saw that it said it was a graphite gasket. Does that provide any benefits?

I had head issues, not head gasket, well until it blew the one that ended it. I had issues with the heads not being machined properly, I got 75 miles on it before valves galled up which was the 3rd tare down. Thats when I discovered the shop had decked the heads beyond their minimal thickness, which places my doubts on how flat they were too. It just seems like from what I've read most guys running high boost in 6.9's accept head gasket failure at a certain point. I think thats ridiculous. Theres gotta be a solution. Head studs on their own do not cut it from what I've seen.

I see, but to be honest between yours and flatlanders situations I've yet to hear about early failure with studs. Head bolts sure. Both claims don't point the finger at the studs either. A bad head job should take the blame over studs, and improper stud installation cannot really be blamed on them either. Having some with no torque or little torque as in flatlanders case is BS. The fact you had to tear into it shows the studs weren't the issue - which you already mentioned to be a bad head job. If the heads aren't flat they will blow...

By your definition what is high boost here? I've heard 12psi or less for stock head bolts. Most I've read about here with studs don't venture much past half over that. Ocassionally venturing over 20psi.

It would be awesome to have some phuzions available though:sly
