Hey guys. I just bought a used ATS 093 turbo for $300. The kit is missing the intake box which i dont care about cause i wouldnt use it anyway, the downpipe which again im not too worried about cause it would be the flat one and i want to get the 3" upgrade, and the crossover pipe which sucks but i can weld and bend pipe so it shouldnt be too hard to make one. It looks like everything else is there though.

My question is i want to get the 3" upgrade for the turbo. I emailed J&H diesel and they said they have the upgrade for $575 and it comes with the exhaust housing, outlet elbow and 3" downpipe. My question is what is so different about the exhaust housing that i need a new one? Cant i just get the 3" elbow and downpipe and use my stock exhaust housing? Thanks

I did that complete upgrade and had the same question. I know that the turbine a/r is very critical in terms of a change in performance as compared to the compressor a/r which is supposed to be less critical.

Maybe someone with the straight scoop will check in.

Did you notice much improvement after the upgrade? Did you buy it direct from ATS and if you dont mind how much did the upgrade cost you?

there is a lot of people who say to find someone at ats that will sell just the elbow and dp, the housing seems to be the same. i am kinda wondering myself, but i think $575 is just crazy.

Just get the elbow and downpipe.. Good luck if you deal with ATS personally though. They are a real pain in the a$$ in my opinion. If you wanted you could build your own downpipe and just use the stock elbow. In my opinion the new housing only gains you quicker boost at 200-300 lower rpm. Not worth it to me. Just my two cents though. I do not do alot of heavy towing.

I bought mine about 7 years ago and believe it was about $350 with gaskets, o rings,
oil line and a couple other misc. parts. I put the engine (a factory turbo 7.3) in my '86 F350 w/o ever running it stock. If it is more effective 2-300 rpm lower than I am glad
I did it because I'm looking for response there and lower for the work I do.

Several years ago I built a 6.9 that I bored .030 over and had the ATS turbo system with 3" downpipe but I had a power problem and boost wasn't building right. I called ATS and after talking to them ended up buying a new turbine housing. Pt # is T730443 was $150. Anyways after installing this housing the engine ran perfect. The original turbine housing was basically choking the engine wouldn't even let it turn full RPMs. The factory turbine outlet does the same thing, it really chokes down airflow. Here's the difference

That is a huge difference!

Anything that would let you make boost lower is worth it IMO ;Sweet

That pic is from Dave Sponaugle's gallery on FTE. He has a lot of miles on that picture because the question comes up so often.

You should post the picture of the ford factory downpipe while you are at itcookoo

Ive seen both the picture comparing the downpipe and the one comparing the outlet elbow. But ive never seen a picture comparing the stock exhaust housing vs. the exhaust housing that is included in the upgrade kit...so does that mean that maybe there isnt a difference? I think im going to call ATS tomorrow and ask if i can get just the outlet elbow and downpipe...not the exhaust housing.

I heard there is a difference in the flow characteristics of the housing. Also I think the exhaust hole in the housing are different sizes. If I was u I'd get the housing! A guy at ATS talked me out of getting it since there weren't any cast. Now I regret it and I'm gonna get 1 after taxes come back.

guys-
there is no difference in the exhaust housing.
the elbow bolts up to where the "factory" elbow is removed.
I have both turbos sitting next to each other. they have the same casting marks on the impeller housing. the outlet elbows are a completely different animal tho.

the only difference in the elbows are one is the ats is a slip fit for 3" and the stock uses a 2 1/2" band clamp. other than that no difference.

Thanks Calvin, I been trying to get that point across but nobody listens. ALSO just modding a new downpipe will make a HUGE difference if you don't want to pay for the elbow. As I said once before, we did some of them at work and the guys were very happy. Yes, the elbow is the great way to go but they are expensive.
Wrap the crossover for a good improvement down low also.
