Ok so apparently at some point in time whatever holds the 4x4 arm to the transfer case linkage fell out and, it's all packed with frozen snow/ice down there.
Any pictures or description of the two bolts or whatever it is that makes the connection would be highly appreciated.
Tomorrow I'll go under there with an ice pick to clear the area.

The lever stick is attached to the adaptor between the trans and transfer case by a single large bolt. I had that brake in my 89 f250 . Either the bolt came loose and fell out of broke or as in mine the adaptor broke.

If I read the original post right, he's not talking about the shifter. The arm is held onto the lever on the transfer case with a nylon (I think) bushing in a hole in the arm. There's a nub (for lack of a better term) on the lever that sticks through the bushing. Here's a couple of pics on my 1985 with a BW 13-45 transfer case. Yours should be similar. Yes, it's very well lubricated by my leaking rear main seal. I hope these help. It's the best I could get after 11:00 at night while it's below freezing. I was laying on my back looking up at the transfer case.

to me, it sounds like its installed in the first bolt boss, rather than the second, which would explain it slipping out,
some have holes with rubber retainers for the pin,
some were slotted
however, ....im 1/2 a bottle into some Jefferson Reserve, and i wont mention the herbs.

There are two bolts holding the lever bracket to the transmission.

I believe your pictures are what I have, are the pictures of your 1989? I believe the assembly changed in the early-mid 90's?
The entire arm in the cab just flopped to the interior floor HOWEVER I was not able to simply pull it up through the rubber boot. I'm guessing something was still attached to the hand-selector arm down below?
I'm thinking the large bolt shown in your picture is still there and mounted to the T-case.
Solid ice under there, can't see much!

i have an 87 with a different t-case shifter, mine goes through the trans cover, not the floor.
i think they swapped to this design in 88

It is buried in snow right now or I would look, but or some reason my 89 w/C6 I just remember it being different then that. Because the mounting hole on the adaptor is crack and letting things move funny. will have to check it when snow is gone.

A few theories:

1. There is a big bolt (>1") that the arm hinges on. That could have broken or backed out. If that happens, the lever will try to fall through the floor, but you won't be able to pull the lever into the cab, because that big chunk of cast iron is still attached under the floor.

2. If the two small bolts that attach the hand lever to the iron casting backed out (or broke), then you would be able to remove the lever into the cab. On the photo below, they are the only brand new bolts. If only one of the little bolts backed out, then it would feel very sloppy, but the bottom end would still be rooted. I ended up welding mine to the cast iron after these bolts kept coming loose on me.

3. There is also a side pivot arm (controls entry into low range) that may have come loose from the main bracket. This would have similar symptoms to #1.

The photo below is likely what you have (shown for "AOD" but my 1990 E4OD/1356 setup is the same, except for the connecting link that goes to the transfer case arm, which looks like it might be shorter in this photo):

Just be glad you don't have the Pot-metal setup circa 1992-up.

Another photo of the same setup (this time showing E4OD transmission confirmed)
