I was actually thinking more along the lines of if you or the wife (God forbid) get into a collision with the truck. In a case like that, it's really hard to say which way your head will move. I think this is why most factory grab handles are either made of soft material, and/or are mounted further forward on the leading pillar of the door.

This is my "help an old gimp get into his truck" strap.

Made it from a piece of an old ratchet strap. Bolted in place.

That looks like a good idea. I'll probably put something like that above the passenger doors on my trucks. My wife isn't very gimpy yet, but she's only 5' tall. I need some running boards or steps for her, too.

Wrapped the handle with some paracord today for added grip. I wrapped everything on the boat this way since classic navy ships had plenty of knot work. Quick and easy.

This is a bit off topic but I was scrolling through Instagram and saw you on an idi page I follow. I always think it’s cool being able to put a face to guys I’ve been talking to on oilburners LOL.
