Since you're in this deep chasing oil leaks, are you planning to reseal the oil cooler while the heads are off? It's easy to get out now and seals are cheap. It's a known issue and if it isn't leaking now, it's likely to be one of the next things to start.

Now that you mention it, I think I am going to do it.

Has anyone used the felpro kit that comes with orings and gaskets?

D'oh

Got it off and the seals were fine... it had been resealed at some point and they used RTV when putting it back together.. which made a mess but didnt seem to adversely affect anything

There is still a tiny bit of gasket material in some places. What's the opinion on very carefully taking a fine wire wheel to it?

The key for me has been low speed when using a steel wheel. I use a variable speed hand drill and put it in low speed and only go as fast as it takes to get it off. The 3m RolLoc products can be very helpful as well if you are sure to cover up the areas where removed bits could get into the oil or caught between the piston and wall and again use a low speed with a oil like wd40.

Been slow but steady progress. As of now the IP is back on, I’m cleaning up the wiring and installing a push button glow plug kit from classic diesel designs. All new beru glow plugs.

I should have it running by the end of this weekend. I’m waiting on some parts for the air intake that I ordered (silicone elbows etc) to get in, then it should be good to go!

Questions:

Anyone know what the 4 pin relay thing does on the IP wiring harness?

right now I’m basically reconstructing that harness. The glow plug wires melted the connector and the wires on the harness had been poorly spliced in several places. I made a switch panel in the cab for cold advance and a push button for the glow plugs. Not using the cold high-idle (solenoid broke and I do not need it). That relay I am guessing is just a switch for the cold circuit. But that wiring loom is so stout I can’t really pull the whole thing apart easily and trace the wires.

I assume that feeding the shutoff solenoid +12v allows the engine to run, and feeding the cold advance +12v turns that on as well

The little relay that always melts is for the fuel heater, you don’t need it either

Thanks. Yeah I deleted that some time ago!

I have to make a decision here, I am making a new intake and I can either do a CDR on the intake or a catch can + road draft tube.

I have stuff for both and I think it would take me the same amount of time either way.

any opinions?

I would do the cdr on the intake, even put a catch can in between if you want to help separate the oil out just make sure it’s large enough porting and capacity. I’ve found if you don’t have vacuum on the cdr you’re going to run into a lot of oil leaks, and the rdt just stinks too.

Nothing quite like pulling up to a long red light and having to breathe crankcase gasses for 4 or 5 minutes!

Had a little bit of a setback today. Adding coolant and it starts running out on the ground. Oh crap...

A little investigating and it’s coming from the thermostat housing. I was a little bewildered as I definitely had no questions about the gasket mating surfaces, took my time scraping everything and it went back together with a nice thick gasket..

After pulling the alternator off and the fuel filter bracket It appears the t stat popped slightly out of its hole and was caught between the gasket and block. No real damage to the gasket or thermostat. Put it back together and it’s now full of coolant, no leaks.

Hope to get it started up tomorrow. I am going to put the CDR on. That was my
Original intention and I have a new one ready to go.

Well today was a success. Runs great, very smooth, NO LEAKS. Drove it around 20 miles. Even the AC was blowing ice cold. I fixed that last summer and was happy to see it apparently has no leaks..

still got some work to do on the intake, I put my old one back on. Have a friend helping me with the new intake /CDR setup this week. I don't have any experience welding aluminum.

wasn’t planning on it but even found time to wash/wax it today
