New to 6.2. Now it won't start; and if it does; it runs poorly until warm.

Replacement for my 1973 400SBC Blazer is a 1989 GMC 6.2 Jimmy.

Started easily and ran fine in Texas (rarely got below 70 degrees); but sat for about 5 years; and now has a hard time starting and running in Colorado (rarely gets above 70 degrees – don’t even try unless it’s above 65).

Symptoms:

Very hard to start. Might take 10 minutes at 70 degrees cycling the glow plugs twice then running the starter for 15 to 30 seconds; then waiting a minute for the starter to cool down and repeating the process (this with 2 good batteries on it and jumper cables from my F250 helping). When it starts; lots of smoke (whitish-blue-gray – sorry I can’t be more exact) and it runs rough till warm; and will die if you let it idle below about 1500 RPM.

What I know:

Except for the transmission leak; this was a very reliable truck before I parked it (for 5 years) and moved it to Colorado. I didn’t start it for the trip from Texas to Colorado; just loaded it on a trailer and took off. Was hard to start when I got here and put new batteries on it.

What I’ve checked:

All glow plugs get 12 volts
All glow plugs check good with an ohm meter
Fast idle solenoid works and has power when cold
Air filter is not blocked
I’ve put in new fuel
Never used much oil (half quart every 3000 miles)
Doesn’t seem to be using oil now

What I’m wondering:

Lift pump?

Thanks,

Joe

Is there smoke while cranking? Also sounds like you might have some air intrusion going on 5 years of sitting will dry out a lot of rubber also try filling the fuel filter with atf it will clean out the injection pump and injectors and welcome to oil burners

Replace the fuel filters, return lines, other rubber hoses you can find.
Personally I would just throw in a new set of 60g glowplugs.

After it's getting warm; but not quite running; there is a little smoke while cranking. I haven't noticed it when I first start on a cold engine. I'll work on getting air out too.

Glow plugs is on my list. I'll work on the other stuff too.

Thanks guys,

Joe

Commonly over looked item is the battery to starter cables. 5years + however old they were. They can have a big effect on cranking speed. They are also kinda cheap if you find some welding lead cable on Amazon or eBay and solder them up yourself. Upgrade a guage or two. Also are the batteries 5years old? Swap them out for new ones.
