Well the plot thickens...

#2 Piston, valve imprint, heavy pitting with hole burrowed into the corner of the relief

#4 Piston, another pinhole in the piston

#6 Piston deep dents from foreign objects and indent in the top of the piston from the prechamber not being installed all the way.

This is precisely why you should have someone experienced with these engines rebuild your idi for you, it’s clear there was too much material taken off the driver side head, and to put the nail in the coffin for that head, it’s cracked between all the valves. I’d be curious to hear what @IDIBRONCO thinks of the holes in the pistons.

Now that looks like shiiit!! :frustrate

Yep. So looks like piston protrusion is within spec, only 18 thou. So I’m thinking these are either decompression pistons or they just didn’t take much off the block. The imprints in the pistons are up to 8 thou deep and the holes are 1/16” deep.

That’s what engitech is as far as I know.
I guess I've never did any research into the Enginetech brand. You're probably right. There has to be some reason that their parts are so much cheaper than the known, quality brand parts are.

I’m still trying to let this sink in :smoke:

I guess I need to get with Wes and discuss where we go from here.

Will update on my end ASAP

Thanks everyone

How do the cylinder walls look? If holes in the pistons aren't all the way thru, I would reuse the pistons. I've used worse. :D
How do the main & rod bearings look?

So, from what I've seen so far, you need a set of heads. That's not too bad.

Pretty glazed and good amount of ring ridge, this engine burnt quite a bit of oil and had some pretty good blowby. We’re working out some better solutions than running this engine, just don’t trust this one for a performance application, haven’t flipped the engine over since both the decks are prepped, but it’s got a good 15 thou of piston to cylinder clearance, bores are pretty ovaled.

Ugh. I have a spare set of heads for a 7.3 that should work fine, but I don't know about the rest of it... That thing looks like someone tried, but didn't know alot about the engine or clearance. Valve lash is one thing.... Valve bash is another. But Wes can pull a rabbit outta his hat. Or another block from a donner with better bones. Still looking forward to seeing how this build goes. My wife is chomping at the bit to get her 85 6.9 project going. May steal some ideas from this thread.:popcorn
