"crack an injector then crank it till fuel appears "

Each injector LINE. To bleed air from the fuel system:

Disconnect glow plug relay.

Then I'd start with the schrader valve, on top of the fuel filter head. Make sure you have a steady stream of fuel (while cranking).

Do not crank for more than 30 seconds at a time. ALLOW STARTER TO COOL for 2 minutes between cranking sessions.

Then open each injector line (slightly) until you see fuel (while cranking) ... then re-torque the line immediately

Charge your batteries.

Repeat until you see smoke (from tail pipe) while cranking ... re-connect glow plug controller ... hope it fires off

No need for a compression check if your truck was running prior to replacing the IP & injectors.
Unfortunately you bought these components from an injection shop that pumps out junk products. Your core parts are probably better than what you just bought.
Having said this, it sounds like you still have air in the system. Try bleeding the lines & try again.
And if you added ether with glowplugs lit, you can bet you’ll need to replace them as well.
You are correct. I was thinking backwards.

is there a spec for fuel pressure on lift pump i cant find one or missed it
3-6psi should be okay

It takes a LOT of cranking to purge the air out of a new system with the mechanical lift pump. You need to crack several injectors (loosen a turn or so) and wait until you see fuel coming from them. Then tighten them up and crank some more. Give it a little gas from the pedal while cranking.

I'm glad to hear that your rig is running ... sorry that you got screwed.

Hall of Shame thread is under IDI Tech Article heading ... for some reason.

If you have a Schrader valve (like a tire valve) on the fuel filter you can loosen the stem in it (you need a valve tool to do this) and put a cup under it to catch any fuel that comes out while you BRIEFLY crank the engine without waiting for the glow plugs to get hot.
This will get the air out of the line much easier than loosening the injectors.
