Which impact is better, air or electric?

As for portable air, one of the local farm service guys took a large propane bottle, probably a 150-gallon (it is about twice the size of the 80-gallon tanks on our big compressors), and added a quik-couple.

The propane cylinder/tank is surprisingly light weight and easily managable.

He connects it to the big compressor at his shop and figures it is full when the compressor kicks off.

He claims he can inflate a 16.9-30 with it.

IR is the only way to go. electric are bulky and eat batteries like no tomorrow . buy the IR and put whip hose for flexability and You are good to go. only use 1/4 electric due to size and have two chargers and one in gun .

Cool idea. I don't doubt that it'll fill a tractor tire.

But, I believe that it's illegal to carry something like that here in Mn.

I do know that If You carry a compressor mounted on Your rig, it's got to be unpressurized when on the road.

Oxy/Acetylene have got to be secured inboard, upright, hoses disconnected, and valves covered.

I've been looking at getting an electric impact for changing all the 8 luggers here on the farm. I only have an el-cheapo HF 25 gallon compressor that can't even keep up with a tire chuck, let alone an impact. Can you guys that have them give me some model numbers, what you use yours for and suggestions?

Well, I went a head and picked up an IR combo kit with the 231G impact and the 170G ratchet. Picked it up on flebay for $90, free shipping, new in the box. I couldn't find a CFM rating on my compressor. It is a 20 gal Speedaire with a 1hp motor. I suspect that it's somewhere between 3.0 and 5.0, so it will likely have a hard time keeping up, but for my limited use, it should be adequate. My purpose is to use it primairily to remove bolts. I've snapped a few off by hand with a cheater bar after trying everything else I could think of. My feeling is its either going to come out or come off.

I will certainly use it to install bolts as well, and even on lug nuts, but always at a lower pressure and then torque by hand. I've got a nice scare on the edge of my eye socket from where some idiot mounted the spare tire under my bed (f150) with an impact. They put the wrong tire under the bed. I went to remove it that night and put the tires in the right locations (two new ones on the axles, and the USED one under the bed) and when the plastic threads let go, the 14" adjustable became air borne and caught me perfectly square just above the eye. I had my feet pushing on the frame, and both hands pulling on the wrench. Only three stitches, but it was a lesson that I won't forget.

If push comes to shove, I've seen a lot of compressors on CL go for $50 to $100 (that's how I got mine), so I can always add a second compressor if the CFM is that much of a hastle. On top of that, my dad has a pair of 2 stage compressors for me. I just need to find a 60+ gal tank to put one on. Too many other things need repaired or replaced right now though.

I have an IR IQv 1/2 cordless gun. its handy but it doesnt have the power of any decent air gun, especially when tightening things, its pretty much worthless. I mainly bought it because of the interchangeability of the batteries and chargers with all the other IQv tools, its much easier to have one charger in my service truck. I also only have the Lithium batteries now, the nicads are crap and weigh twice as much. The other day I used it to pull the wheels off of a jetta and it couldnt handle a couple of the lugs. Bottom line is the cordless will never replace my air guns.

And those guys that dont like impacts on anything, you go try to make your living wrenching without one.

I'm comming up on my birthday, and my wife has given me the green light to buy an impact. If I go with air, I'll get an IR 231, but I got to thinking about it and I'm wondering if I shouldn't get an electric instead. What do you guys think?

i have air and elc the elc is the snapon 1/2" 18v i use that way more than the air just cuz its so much easier i used it to take a whole truck apart to get the motor and trans out and the batt lasts forever i would get the elc, i also use it on my toy hauler to lower and raise the jacks
