I am replacing my water pump. I have 2 bolts that are different than all the other short bolts. Does it matter where they go? I also found a connector down at the hose clamp for the upper hose. I don’t see anything it would connect to.

Yes. Those two shorter bolts go into the very top two holes. Your new water pump should come with two new bolts that are meant to go into these holes. From your description of the location and your picture, my guess is that the plug goes onto the bottom of your fuel filter bowl. That's for your "water in fuel" light. If your have a one piece filter without a bowl, some of them have a place to use that same sender for the light, others don't.

I'm pretty sure the longest two bolts(edit, it's the short bolts) go in the top two holes. But look it up-- the important part is getting it right. And you need to use black RTV on the threads as those two go into the crank case.

You need to put the two shorter bolts at the top. If you accidentally use longer ones, it hits the IP gear. Ask me how I know....

Did your water pump come with two new bolts?

The short ones all looked the same length.
There was a casting update where the two shorter bolts weren't needed. It's impossible to tell what you'll get these days. You can compare the old and new pumps to see if they use the same casting. If the are the same thickness, you can reuse all of the bolts. It's still best to use the new bolts that should have come in the box with your new water pump.

Original style boss height is .8” and uses the shorter 1 1/4” bolts, newer casting has 1.0” boss height and uses 1 1/2” bolts, you could measure the bosses. You can also probably use the 1 1/4” on either, I think it will grab with enough but it’s not something you want to strip while torquing and not having enough thread.

My bolts are definatly no 1/4 in different in length. My pump came with 2 new bolts. Mo markings on the head for strength rating and no washers. Looked very 3rd world

The 2 with the treads all the way are the only 2 like that so I put them in the top. I figured since they are the only ones different they should go in the top.

New bolts go in the top two bolt holes. Rest of bolts go in their usual spots. Bolt er up and do some burnouts.
