Water injection vs. intercooler.

So at this point, I want to add either an intercooler of water injection.

I've read a little on the subject, but I was hoping to get some information from those who have experience.

If I were to do the water injection, I'd likely do the splash system from the article here.

So, I'm asking opinions of one over the other, and should I choose water injection, would the plug on the intake snail be a good place to put the nozzle?

Personally I would do both if I had the time and money. But do the intercooler first. Thats a one time cost and no refilling a jug of water because you used it up. An intercooler is working free all the time. No draining or refilling it

Can the ATS 093 intake snail be used for an intercooler install, or would I need a different intake?

Did he solve his heat soak issue by chance?

It was an observation on a 100+ day, (pulling a large toy-hauler up a long canyon with AC on) that has turned into a reason not to, when in fact 99% of the time there is no heat soak issues whatsoever. I now believe an air-to-air would have had similar results. The water intercooler really works, but it does have a few more moving parts than air-to-air. (More things to break.) If it does happen to stop pumping you are just back to normal so its not like you are stranded if something goes wrong.

I still have the system and you can bet it will be going on my next build, even though I can fit a full size air-air in this truck.

Also- when we weighed that trailer fully loaded it was 15,800 lbs. My original comment was meant to show that I had put it to an *extreme* test and found its limits. I failed to convey that.

Interesting. I like the water to air idea because I wont have to block most of my radiator in the process, and it seems it wont be an issue to keep my AC.

Edited to add: Well that pricetag is looking pretty attractive too. What options did you choose for your install? Edited to add again: Ha, just re read the article.

So, anything you would change about what you bought?

Yes, I would measure and get the largest radiator you can fit if you are planning to tow anything over 12K lbs. Anything under 12K and the radiator I have is fine.

Rereading that I can see why people take the heat soak as a major bummer, but it was really only a minor thing that I spent too much time on. It was really me trying to justify spending the money on a second radiator...

Another thing to keep in mind is that the pump on that truck was turned up really hot. Prior to the IC I could peg my EGTs and boost very quickly. The IC allowed me to stay in the throttle for longer in all cases. The unloaded performance was dramatically better when going over passes. Unfortunately my block was not prepped for the extra power and I blew the head gasket. (With ARP head studs sitting on shelf in garage... :puke: )

My Type4 cam was also not yet installed. It is my firm belief that the cam and studs would have made all the difference at the power level I was trying to operate this old girl.

I noticed your wastegate appeared to be wired shut in one of the pictures. Was it the extra boost that killed your head gaskets? I don't have studs (planned install), but I'm setting my wastegate at around 11 psi for that reason.

No wastegate on this old turbo. That wire was to help hold the exhaust elbow on until I found a new ring-clip for it.

You should be OK, but I would stud it when you get the chance.

So, I'm still curious if I need to get a different intake hat for the intercooler or not. Seems most have a hat from typ4.
