Typ4, Agnem, and select others are the crack team... they speak, we listen with big anime eyes.

Most of your help came from the more active B team... ;Sweet

Just poking at you... glad it was a wiring issue! It might be a good idea to cut the insulation around the connectors and check for the green death... your unique loss of color on the wires may help others diagnose their issue, with proof to boot if you put up photos of the dissected old wire.

ever worked on a pre 63 ford, where the starter only has a hot lead?
then a relay on the firewall.

I liked that type of system. Even used to drill out the rivets, clean up the innards with emery cloth, and put back together. Back when it was good copper.

You gotta be kidding. That was NOT one of Ford's "Better Ideas". The relay had to carry the WHOLE current draw of the starter, as did the wiring to/from it. They quickly found out that would NOT work for the current draw of the 6.9 starter, and wised up and ran the starter motor wire directly from the battery.

Did that "drill out & clean up" on a riding lawnmower for a co-worker. Darn relay was the same as the Ford fender mounted ones!!!
