by blocking the wastegate the turbo is producing more airflow than the motor needs. even with the fuel maxed out 15psi is atleast a couple pounds more than is needed for a complete burn. the problem is that this extra boost makes more heat even though the turbo is still in a good efficiency range. this heat can make it so that the power gained is not what it should be, unless intercooled. the next problem is that by the wastegate not opening, the drive pressure to turn the turbo starts to get pretty high also limiting power output on the big end. so making too much boost in a system not designed for that boost level can actually limit or reduce power out put. one thing ive always wondered, is that if you had intercooling to keep intake temps in check, and the turbine wheel and housing sized as to keep drive pressure at a reasonable level, if the extra boost would add much to cylinder pressure.

or you could do this.....but I don't think there is a chance in hell of our turbos ever making enough pressure to do this.....Under any Circumstances.

It would sure be interesting to know how much boost that thing was running.

I was at Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in August and saw the JCB diesel streamliner go 352 mph with two 444 cu in four cylinder JCB tractor engines. One of their engineers I talked to said they were running 85psi boost. That is a bunch considering they run wide open for 5 miles. Also saw a Cummins 5.9 in a streamliner built by Chassis Engineering from Iowa go 308 mph.
