I’m looking to build my own turbo set up and I’m looking to use a common, easy to maintain and find parts for turbo that won’t blow the heads off my 6.9. It’s got studs but I’m not looking for crazy power, just something to give it the extra mustard. I love these motors, but I can’t risk causing problems for the one I just put in my truck a few months ago. I’d also like to have something that I won’t have to worry about intercooling with. A really basic set up, like the banks, but without the price tag and pain in the ass install of a banks. So with that said, any of you that know turbos, what’s a good one for this type of build? I’m going to be doing my own exhaust/intake piping and will be mounting it to the passenger side of the motor so fitment is not an issue. Passenger side battery/starter relay will be relocated nicely to the driver side to create room if it’s necessary. The heater box is already out of the truck and the truck will be getting an aftermarket heater system so no concern for space under the hood there either.

From my understanding a slightly modified ATS kit would be just about what you are looking for… other than building it yourself. @1mouse3 and @IDIoit could probably tell you a thing or two about building turbo set ups… they know their stuff.

From what I’ve read, the Banks kit is and expensive, finicky setup, but makes good power without crazy EGTs

I have a Hypermax kit in Duchess, my 86, on a studded 7.3. Super easy to install, the kit is more on the back of the engine than on the top, so still really easy to work on, very simple, makes great power… but, the EGTs, are rather high… so an intercooler may be in order. That being said, I recently installed a stock air filter system from a 6.0 PSD in Duchess. Cruising EGTs are still high, i.e. 800-950 in the manifold, but EGTs no longer climb near as fast at max throttle, and top out around 1100-1150. Before, my EGTs climbed much faster than my boost, and could hit 1250-1300 with ease, which I didn’t let it do very much, and never for more than a couple of seconds. But, the 6.0 filter also helped boost response, and I did hit a new top boost with this filter, 16 psi. It is not a stock Hypermax turbo, appears to be an upgrade. Before it would hit 14 max, and be slow to light off. The 6.0 filter also made the engine quieter, so that’s another plus in my book.

I doubt you could piece together a custom kit cheaper than the CDD Stage 1, which is essentially a modified stock turbo setup with ATS bits, which should be perfect for what you are trying to do.

Just for a comparison, I am currently re-building my '51 F1, this includes a custom turbo kit for the Ford 300 under the hood (mock-up shown below). I have quite a bit more in both time and money into the 300 than I do into the CDD Stage 1 kit that I put on my '85 F350 a few winters ago. Obviously, no one makes a turbo kit for a 300 in a '51 pickup, so there is a ton of hand fabrication required, but that sounds like the road you are heading down. Don't forget, the turbo is only half the equation, you also will need to upgrade the fuel system to support the extra air that you are now capable of stuffing into the engine.

Summit Racing has aftermarket heaters that have pretty solid ratings. I like my under the hood roomy, so having a reasonably sized heater system I can put in the cab is more attractive to me than the giant AC/heater box they put in these trucks.

I know my IP is on its way out, it’s blowing white smoke that gets lesser or greater with timing, so I was already planning on picking up a CDD soon. Thanks for sharing your setup. That 300 is awesome.
