Zf swap can take a few hours. Isn't hard to do.

What exactly is the memory stick for the e4od?

That’s the series I watched last night!
I made it through 4 last night and I watched one at breakfast this morning. I’ll order from him and get the memory stick.

So it all went well?

Did you upgrade any of the parts to improve performance for towing?

I’m for sure going to diy after finding his video series last night.

Like I said earlier no fluff and very clear instructions
Yes. Tranny is in and have been driving last couple of months. Shifting is much more firm than when before the rebuild. I did not do the Trans-go Kit, I just did the Superior Shift Kit he includes, as a must have upgrade. I did do the center support repair which he outlines as mine was hammered out, (the large snap ring trick). The hub bolted to the center support on mine was wallowed out and I replaced that with the upgrade/update repair kit I got from him also. I also replaced my early E9 pump assembly with an F5 casting number pump. They were available 1995 and up. I got mine used off of ebay and did the normal rebuild on it. The pump produces higher fluid volume than the earlier E9 casting '89-94 pump which were less than optimal. I like the fact he points out areas to inspect and what to look for as far as potential issues. He's a regular Mr. Rogers for transmissions. Very thorough.

I also replaced my torque converter with a triple disc unit. The torque converter was my real problem. I wouldn't rebuild this tranny and use and old converter. Those things are a real pain as far as I am concerned.

Even though, I am still messing around with my FIPL/TPS trying to get it shifting better. That's been a challenge. I am actually looking at Transcommand and US Quickshift 4 to be able to have some control of how and when it shifts. Never the less, tranny is doing just fine otherwise.

That’s great to hear. Did you consider a manual swap at all or just happy with the auto?

I keep thinking about swapping as there is a full set not to far away and for about the same cost and the rebuild parts.

I figure $1500 ish for the auto rebuild if I diy. Was that about on par with yours?

Personally, I would have liked this truck to be a 5 speed. But the fact is it is very clean, meaning not butchered. I am only the second owner of it, so I figured it best to leave it as originally delivered and just get it mechanically correct. It's a 1994 Vin K truck, 4 WD standard cab long bed. So it is kind of a rolling restoration of sorts. If it had been chewed up, I probably would look to switching it over to manual. Probably have like $1200 into it. I own a machine shop so I probably have a bit of an advantage on doing some of this work to the transmission.

Last night I was set on no new projects for awhile and was going to just rebuild my auto..but looking a the cost of a triple disk torque converter made the choice a bit harder.

Looks like billet triple disks are around $1200 alone. I just want minor upgrades for regular towing.

I like the idea of upgrading the pump.

But with all this I could easily pay for the clutch and full swap parts. I just hope I don’t end up taking weeks to manual swap if that’s what I do.

Howdy Y'all, so to follow up on this. I was towing my enclosed trailer with all of my carpentry tools and pipe scaffolding in it this spring. I forgot to take it out of overdrive. Its not super hilly around here so I figured it didn't make to much difference. When I would drive the truck would jump out of 4th to 3rd and shutter a little bit unless I took over drive off and even then it would act up a bit. I have a shift kit in this truck and it has an HD torque converter from the previous owner.

So I got home and drained the fluid and found small gold flakes in the pan. I changed all the fluid and filter and ran the truck all summer. and towed the trailer a few more times with no issues. This is all super local driving so maybe I just didn't test it enough.

I towed my equipment trailer two more times about 40 minutes all loaded again and the last time (Monday) the O/D light started flashing and my truck seemed low on power but no jumping around. I pulled the code via the under hood connection and get code 93 (coast clutch solenoid circuit failure)

I have a second transmission with 65k miles on it from a 1993 7.3 truck. I already pulled my transmission and am planning on putting in this one for now. I figured it was worth a shot. I now wonder if I just had some bad connection somewhere in the system but again I had gold flakes in the pan when I pulled the trans.

My converter looks great with no signs of overheating and the fluid in it looked great. Do you think its safe to reuse this HD converter in the new trans?

My plan is to either zf5 in the future or do a DIY stage 2 build on my spare trans this winter.

Hopefully you guys have made it this far..im just sort of stumped on what my best action plan would be. I want to have the truck back on the road in the next week for the lowest cost I can..I have 2 torque converters one came with spare and the HD came with the truck.

Thanks!

My biggest concern would be possibly putting the metal flakes from the HD convertor into the other (1993) transmission.

I always towed in overdrive unless the transmission started hunting. 6 trips from Maine to Mexico over the Sierra Madre mountains, 5 trips out west - all towing a 8,000 Lb travel trailer. The 4EOD transmission lasted 240,000 miles. The owners manual recommended towing in overdrive - unless the transmission hunted up and down. 4.11 rear gears.

It's weird how some folks seem to have nearly bulletproof E4ODs and others just have the devil and then some. Looking through the receipts of my recent purchase, 1990 F350, the original trans lasted about 100k, an AAMCO lasted about 70k, and currently 55k on a reman installed by Ford. Fingers crossed this one lasts.

This truck has 278k on the odometer. I have no idea when this was one was put in or modified. I bought the truck in 2019 with 250k..I was told it had a shift kit and upgraded TC. The pump and TC look to be in very good shape. Minus those little bronze flakes that come out. Perhaps the snap ring popped off the coast clutch. It never sounded right after my motor swap though. It always had a sort of grumble/whine coming out of the TC area while it idled.

I wish I had a better solution than just putting in some random 60k trans..but I need to have this back on the road soon.

If I don’t manual swap I’m going to rebuild myself.

With those bronze flakes are you sure somebody didn't pour Goldschlager in the trans?
