Do not delete the bypass. Spend the $25.clams and rebuild it.

Sonnax 36605-02K

Sounds like the spring is worn out allowing the bypass to open.

What this bypass prevents is internal damage to the tranny from lack of lube. Usually what fails is the out put shaft bushing and low reverse gear set. This is why you will find all kinds of OS bushings for the out put shaft. This repair will run about $1500 bucks, providing the case didn't get destroyed when the bushing failed.

Any one here familiar with John Wood?
I hear that he is a top name in transmission rebuilds.
I also hear that he deletes the bypass on all his rebuilds unless specified.
Why is this?

Ok, I took it for another ride to get it warm. Trans temp gauge said 210°.
So I pulled her Infront of the garage and checked her with the laser.
I checked the lines at the cooler, the inlet was 124°, the outlet was 93°.
Then I checked the lines where they go in the trans, inlet was 143°, outlet was 143°.
I guess the bypass is bad or going bad.
So I'll wait to flush the cooler and remove the second cooler, until I rebuild the bypass, and do it all at once.

Ok
I might be getting annoying, but I got bored today
I went to the garage
Moved the trans temp sender to the correct port in the driver's side
Flushed the cooler again.
And took her for a ride.
It took a lot longer than normal for her to get above 100°
Then I hit the back roads
The house she got was 210°, according to the Auto Meter gauge.
So I went back to the garage, and put the laser on it at the sender.
173°
Maybe just a bad gauge?

Ok
Good news and bad
I received my sonnex bypass kit today, and pulled it apart
Low and behold, the bypass was full of trash, I cleaned it out and reassembled it.
Everything went real smooth.
Until.........
I have the horrible problem of getting sidetracked and over tightening bolts sometimes, and blamo, I broke the rear banjo bolt.
The one with the internal check valve.
So now I'm in the process of trying to find another, which seems to be almost impossible.
Does anyone know where I can get one?

I think I found one, but I think it's the front bolt, just the regular banjo bolt.
This is driving me up the wall.

I found one
Got lucky
Extremely lucky

Put her back together today, and went for a test run.

Outside ambient temp was ~80°

I took her up the mountain here, running empty, but very steep inclines.
Trans temp never exceeded 170°

I think she's right.....
Finally

Trans temp was cooler than ambient?

My rule of thumb is the trans temp should be ambient + 100 F at operating temp

You can try your Ford dealer for the check valve.
