Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Moving on to the engine, I pulled out these pieces from the cab:

In addition to the super dirty air filter, the turbo looks rough. Impeller spins freely, but has some slop in it:

So will likely need to send that off to be rebuilt. But I'll wait until I've had a chance to see how the rest of the engine looks. He was pretty good about organizing the parts he removed:

That gives the way my original engine in the dump truck looked a run for its money I'd say!

I did notice this sticker on the passenger side valve cover:

Front bumper is welded to the frame:

So if I want to re-use it, I'll have to cut it off and fabricate a proper way to re-attach it using the factor holes. Not sure why anyone would have just welded it on...

Front shock brackets that I'll need for the conversion:

Nice to see they are just bolted on. Not sure of those are factory or not?

Better pics of the aftermarket gauges:

Yes, the windshield is cracked in the lower left coner.

Final few pics to wrap up. Despite being Custom trim, it has power locks and windows:

Runnings boards and extra driver side front fender (looks to from a Bronco):

Truck is not perfect by any means, but I think I did pretty good @ $3k. We split the cost of the wrecker coming out ($335), so I'm into the doner truck by a total of around $3,170 plus 2 hours driving. I think I did well and there will be a bunch of spare parts off this 88 I can use on my 89. It does have factory air as well, and the blower housing looks to be in great shape compared to mine. Plus the A/C compressor, hoses, related brackets, etc., which I would have otherwise have had to chase down.

That should make for an excellent parts truck, there’s lots there. Looking forward to see how it all goes together.

What's up with that fuel filter? Looks like it's in to different places in the two pictures it can be seen in. Is it mounted to anything? Looks like an electric fuel pump is just sitting on the fender liner next to the vacuum pump also.

Yeah, the fuel filter is loose. The bracket it mounts to was in the cab. I cleaned up some of the needles and put the driver side valve cover back on loosely for now:

The exposed intake might have allowed water to enter the engine. The oil level is way high:

So the engine might be in bad shape. A real shame if true.

Was able to raise the front enough to drop the ramps for unloading:

Gave it a quick power wash, to get rid of the dirt and grime that had been accumulating from sitting under pines trees for a couple of years:

Got the bed cleaned up somewhat:

I guess maybe the truck was white originally, or at least the bed currently on it.

Coolant appears low, but he might have drained it I suppose.

Moved the cab & chassis frame over to another bay and got the cab off the lift and rolled it out of the lift bay as well:

So I'll be able to push the donor truck into the bay with the lift and have a closer look from the underside.

Got the truck pushed into the shop:

Pulled the batteries and put them on chargers. One started charging right away, the other one I had to force charge for 5 minutes (Using Noko Genius 10s) before it started taking a charge:

They are 3 years old, so hopefully they still got a little life left in them.

Just for grins before raising it in the air, I got out my Warn M15000 subframe:

Some modifications will definitely be needed if I end up mating that winch to that bumper.

Got the old girl up in the air:

And then drained the oil. As I suspected from the way high oil level, the oil pan was full of water:

Given that the cowl seal was missing on this truck, and the previous owner had left the intake exposed after removing the turbo, gave rain water a straight path into the engine. A total of right around 5 gallons of rain water was drained before I got to the oil. So I don't have high hopes for this engine, but fortunately that's not what I was after, but still a shame as this engine could have otherwise been in pretty good shape.

I bought a parts truck about a year ago that had the same type oil. Fortunately, it hadn't sat like that for very long so there was maybe only a gallon of water. The engine is probably rebuildable (both mine and yours) so it's not something for the scrap iron pile.

Hopefully so. Now that I've drained the water and oil, is there anything I can do to prevent further deterioration short of opening it up (pull heads and drop oil pan and spraying exposed surfaces with oil)? I didn't really want to get into all that now, but if it can save the engine, I might go ahead and do it.

Pull the glow plugs and injectors, pour a little oil in each hole and bar it over by hand is what I would suggest. Dont use wd40, us an oil like 30w or lighter.

I pulled a 7.3 from PNP 3 years ago. Had front end damage to the
L/F corner, but never touched the engine. Worked on it 3 days with a saws all, cuttin fender, Core support, Radiator out...etc... and finally the mangled Hood.
Some one got the AC Compressor, Alt, and Air Cleaner, didn`t want them anyway.....but one night had some rain. Next day pulled the GP`s, rotated the engine and looked like couple rain birds shooting water LOL.

Got it home and using a meat syringe and mystery Oil filled the GP holes, let it set a while, rotated the engine and added more. Did this off and on for a couple weeks just to make sure things didn`t rust.
Have a 6.9 also in the shop, been sitting all winter, thinking of hitting them again just to be safe now it is sort of warming up.
