I'll try to get this back on topic.

holding 25 mph (the legal limit for agricultural equipment with the SMV placard) isn't the big deal, it's getting stopped.

i was wondering why the specific speed limit requirements, makes sense now.

jasper its literally right off there site. If you dont agree take it up with them :dunno
ID ask what you disagree with but powerstroke wants to keep the thread on topic.
GV was my idea/solution, you don't have to agree with it. And the practicality of cost
just isn't there for some people.

Im guessing you've towed 4 low with OD before since your asking about it? how does it act? does it it "lug" in OD? or does it get your rpms right where you like them and keep the motor/trans happy?

as stated

Now remember just cuz someone regurgitaten some misinformation ' and you read it "does NOT make it correct"!!!

As to the gearing vs torque discussion I will ask you this question to see if I am clean out of the ballpark!

83 toyota 4x4 hilux,
I built this junk as my daily driver.
My rock crawler is geared at 173:1 with both arb's locked in the diff's ( read spool) how does ANYTHING stay together on the rubicon trail?
If the "as stated" bit about breaking stuff in low range is true how have I possibly run this thing thru the trail and survived?
I am no keyboard warrior, but In my opinion I beleive you could use some ojt and less reading junk online???!

Also every time I go to the big city (Frisco ca) famous for its hilly grades remember the streets of sf tv show?
I run my brownie in low all day up and down the hills.
Rarely get over 35.
Hope you don't get upset!

idk what you mean by ojt.

Are you pulling/towwing anywhere from 10,000+ pounds? If your not towing and your trailing, not the same type of "wear occurring" (as your ujoints and such get beat up from wheel "hop" or other offroad obstacles) that weight up a hill on a single drive shaft, more so u joint is going to be intense.

if you look back youll see i mentioned my 53' willys. I intend to pull the pin to be able to run 2 low but dont intend to tow with it.

My question is:

If 2wd low has so many applications and more so is all around safe to use that way, why doesnt anyone make it available on a tcase? (if you know of a truck that does please let us know) ~~~this is a literal question not an "argument"~~

The load debate is pretty simple, if your not distributing power to the front axles your not distributing load up there either. All load is on the rear axle. Doesnt mean your going to grenade you u jouint but does mean its going to take excessive wear compared to only having to hold/pull half the load because its distributed.

When towing heavy and slow, I always use low range, and usually need 4x4 when I do. Just because low range can put way more torque to the drivetrain doesnt mean you need to. Takes almost no throttle to move stuff in low range.

agreed. my jeep will pull monster logs without touching the throttle, and those dont have wheels haha

seems the smaller gearing of the 4x4 high over the 2wd high (this is how my jeep, id expect most 4x4's to be like that) would be enough to get it done, thats why i feel a gv in 2wd would be a good option.

What do you mean by this? If you mean that 4x4 high range is a lower gear than 2wd , not correct in any transfer case that I have ever rebuilt, including lots of heeps.

Look up twin sticks for transfer case.
I have a set , the t18 in my 46 -2a has 2 sticks but is NOT twin sticked.
Twin sticks Allow you to use both gates seperatly 2-4/h/l

Ojt=on the job training.

time out, what do you mean it has two sticks but is not twin sicked?
kind of contradicting statement from the way i read it, can you clarify?

your 2a should have twin sticks off the transfer if its the proper transfer for the year.

Liek i said before, the "twin stick" dana transfer will NOT allow you to shift into 2wd low it has a pin that stops this, if yours doesnt stop this, someone has already moded it and removed the pin (a well known mod to the 18)

thats EXACTLY what i mean. The differences arent "night and day" but they are present in the grandcherokee transfer case gearing

Here's what I do when towing something heavy. Put it in 4hi and give er hell. If that doesn't work out for my truck and the load I am trying to pull, put it in 4low, putt along, and forget about it. It's fairly simple. Doesn't need to be this complicated IMO.

lol right ^^^^^

If one has a turbo, then i would think 4hi should work fine, if one doesnt have a turbo.....then you found your problem and its not gearing LOL

Well in all honesty, these old rigs have the capabilities of towing extremely heavy loads in 4low just fine. Yes, a turbo is an awesome power adder, but my truck seemed to pull okay in N/A form. It just required more patience and downshifting when I hit the hills. Either way, find the right gear that works for you and your truck and forget about it.

ive heard VERY impressive storys of what a N/a can pull. A turbo woudl replace the need to "hunt for gears" alot of the time. It is often overlooked how much that will help a "gearing" problem hahaha

Holy moly that was a bunch of unrelated garbage.

Almost none of my original thoughts and questions were addressed past page 2!

I was more concerned with being able to find a way to utilize the billet converter to keep temps down and use the transmission for what it's worth. Not any of this gear splitting stuff. I know this 7,000 lb truck and "500lbs of wintertime counterweights" over the axle with a turbo and 4.10 gears and an auto will move the load. I wanted to ask to see how others would best with the existing setup and how to stop safely.

This is one of the first times I've experienced major thread derailment akin to other forums I don't post in. No need to get in a ******* match...

The grain got hauled, it was a beautiful day, no flat tires, no close calls and everybody got home safe.

We're done here

Any problem with running an E4OD in overdrive with transfer case in low?

Im guessing you've towed 4 low with OD before since your asking about it? how does it act? does it it "lug" in OD? or does it get your rpms right where you like them and keep the motor/trans happy?

I don't think it will ever shift into OD?

Any issues with driving a fair distance in low?
Drivability was confronted aswell as general wear and a "screaming" motor as well as applying all of the force on the rear ujoints instead of distributing it to the front aswell

uggh its all been pretty on topic, the GV and turbo comments were in reference to your gearing/traveling questions (as well as the general question of drivability) in the initial post as well and more so to the un-answered question that still lies in "limbo" that was VERY on topic:

I don't think it will ever shift into OD, but convertor should lockup when it shifts 2nd to 3rd. Top speed is ~35 MPH. That engine will be screaming at that speed. I accidently shifted into 2 low when pulling a 30 ft 5er, didn't know you had to put it in neutral to shift out of 2 low. Thought I had plenty of time to cross a hiway from a side road, almost crapped my pants when I seen the traffic coming at me. There was a little brake screaming from the on coming traffic. Suggest he should try it off hiway, meaning a side road. Better have the E flashers going on the hopper trailer. What year and model of truck? PSD-IDI or gasser.

IDK why you want to end the thread
We're done here
when people have asked you and others ontopic questions and they to are still in search/need of an answer to

I guess ill try again as its completely on topic and still hasnt been answered or adressed:

Will it even shift to OD?

When i pulled my IDI my 4x4jeep never even considered OD
Furthermore when i drove from my parents house, where i log, to mine one day i forgot i had the jeep in 4low

it never kicked od in and i had to go extremely slow before pulling over because it was just "screaming"

Will it even shift to OD?

p.s.: FYI if it wont go into OD then the GV seems like a very relevant post

Also if its only 12,000lbs why does it need pulled in 4low? Guys tow mass amounts of weight with there 2wd trucks all the time?

I feel like necessity is relevant to thread topic
