Towing heavy at 20MPH

Used 4 hi and 2 hi for the trip. I just used 4 low to break the wagon free from the dirt that it was frozen to and the tire chocks that I couldn't move because they were frozen to the ground too.

I forgot how easily a wagon tows once above 5mph. No "real" hills here in the northern 1/2 of Indiana so it was smooth sailing to drop off 180bu of beans. (11,000 lbs)

I moved a F-Superduty with the 14' bed full of drywall. Ihad to have had 10 ton on the hook. 3.73's and 40" tires. Only time I have ever "rolled coal" out of an NA diesel, lol....

But we rocked it and rocked it just fine.

With the green wagon I scaled 20,300lbs and dropped off 10,000lbs of soybeans. With the orange wagon I scaled 22,700 and dropped off 12,500lbs of beans. Once off the snow in the farm yard 2-hi for 20 miles at 20-25MPH. A few bunny hills to get some boost and 800F egt for 5 seconds but pretty much just loafs with it in 3rd at these speeds on flat ground. 1200RPM and 450F egt.

It'll haul the mail just fine

I towed my idi with my 4.0 grandcherokee in low, its was screaming high rpm, if i did it agian id just put it in regualar 4 as it has a smaller gearing than 2wd. Only had to go 1/4 mile though and didnt pass 20-25...but still engine screaming lol

I built a beast-of-a hitch mount for a 9g winch for this truck and i log with it . Ive pulled MONSTER logs with this thing in low..... stuff you would never think a little suv would drag off road and through mud. Low has its proper uses for sure!!


I think the real solution here is a GV (or other) over/under unit. just saying

Funny. I don't think gear vendors work under 25 mph.

Your not going to get a smaller 1st but you will get first-over which will be smaller than standard second. thats gotta be a good cruising rpm and good power even that "slow"

I can't remember if it's the GV or one of the others.
But it uses fluid pressure to engage, which is where the minimum speed comes into play.
Although I don't like the ZF'S, the gearing isn't as bad as some try to say it is. He could've ran in 2nd if he needed more power.
Yeah a overdrive would be nice, but I can find many cheaper ways to improve towing capabilities/mpg.

The GV will run at any speed, it's only recommended not to shift it below 25 MPH.

many many cheaper (and probably not very effective) ways... but NO better than what the GV can do for your gearing, mpg, engine/drive-line-stress, transmission temperature, your EGT's, etc


8 auto gears are gonna do you more justice than 5 "manual". Especially at the bottom end and the top end.

thats why you see (usually 3 speed) AUX trans on many semi applications (even thou they usually already have 7+ speed manuals)

he could have ran in second like you said, but with out the gear splitting people can find themselves choosing between a "happy motor/driveline" and a "happy-driver/drivability". Where proper power is to high of rpm but proper/preferred RPM isnt sufficient/responsive power, not to mention MPG.

split those gers and both the truck and the drive are satisfied

Starting to wonder if you really have a GV in your truck? GV uses hydraulic pressure to engage the clutch. Has to be going a certain speed to engage (even with power to the solenoid). Seems like GV says 25 mph.
