Midnite... Please tell us what thermostat you have in your motor. They only offer a 192 degree thermostat so I'm tinking you have an after market stat. Thanks and many are waiting for your speedy reply... Might be something we can change too...

Please explain what you did.


I have the clutch "pinned" on several of my engines, all Cummins, by drilling/tapping the thicker portions of the clutch housings and forcing the internals to lock up by tightening bolts into these threaded holes, usually four bolts/holes per clutch, then safety-wiring the bolts so they can't back out.

Is this similar to what you have done, or do you have a better trick.
I had braces initially that ran between the water pump bolts and the fan bolts, figured this way if the braces eventually brake the fan will just freewheel like it does stock, and that's exactly what happened - 6 months later the stress upon startup and shutoff finally fatigued the braces and they cracked at the bends near the water pump bolts. No big deal, I figured, we're essentially back to stock now, should be fairly good - wrong, the next week I had to go to Chicago, where I promptly got stuck in the morning commute traffic, and then in the slow city traffic, and engine almost overheated on me, it successfully boiled off 1 gallon of its radiator content. So since the small braces didn't work, I went with big ones - running from the water pump bolts straight to the blades, these should hold up better as now they work in tension and not shear and the force is also much smaller now.


That fan is estimated to consume 11 HP. Take it for what it's worth. I don't think pinning it is the way to go.
Mel, I realize tis a power draw, but I mostly run around empty, and whenever I happen to tow I need the cooling even more. My current clutch sucks big time, I can't afford a new one ($150) or electric fan conversion any time soon, so I do what I can with what I got.

To use my thermostat, you might also need to switch engines.;Sweet

My 1978 K-20 Chevy nor my 1972 F-250 Hi-Boy never ever had a fan-clutch and both are power-houses.


There are many applications for the 6.9/7.3 engines, other than in these trucks.

Also, I think the IDI block was initially an old International gas-burner block; so............, surely, if one looked around, there are direct-drive fan hubs for these engines.


A free-wheeling fan might be okay out West on the open LEVEL road in coolish weather; but, when you actually need all that horse-power, you also need that fan sucking air, so I see little real advantage in these clutched fans.


Now, I might go for a fan that had an electric clutch, something that could be called into action at the flip of a switch, like an A/C clutch; then, when needed, the fan could be turned ON, and when not, OFF.



I almost ordered one of those HUGE Lincoln MK-VIII electric fans, so that I could have air coming across the A/C condensor at full fan speed, regardless of engine RPM; but, alas, the Lincoln fan is about twice as thick as the space I have.

it's hanging on a chain-hoist in the shop basement.

I may someday build it to the gills and stuff it in something, maybe an old International pick-up or ton, make a real fire-breathing dragon out of it; I would rework the heads into direct-injection, though.

Where do you find one of these hubs? Also, how does it attach to the water pump, through the threaded shaft or through the 4 big bolts? Cause I just don't trust the threaded shaft for that, I know you never had an issue with you pinned fans flying in the radiator, but that same size of fan just tore through 5 steel brackets too...

You might check with IH I think many of their trucks with the 6.9 and 7.3 had a direct drive fan, but I can't be 100% sure, bujt I have heard that before. My concern would be the cost to fuel economy rather than the cost to power.

The IH waterpumps have a flat 4 bolt fan hub, there is one accessory hole missing on the casting, I dont know which one for sure but I think it is ac bracket mount hole. I dont know if the pulleys are the same or not. Look under the hood of some of the old Uhaul 2 tons, itl tell you everything you need to know.

Cool, now I just need to find a suitable IH truck. As for fuel economy - the fact I'm seeing no temp difference between locked and unlocked while on the freeway suggest to me that the airflow in both situations is the same, which would mean the fan ain't creating much of an engine drag at that point. Low-speed driving yes, I'd imagine the fan does kill fuel economy somewhat, but I can't tell just how much.

In the winter-time, I swap the trucks back to clutch-fans and can see no difference in mileage and feel no difference in power.

I am sure there are differences, just too small to be noticed and not worth the hassle.
