I think it is about getting a DT 466 as much as anything. They sound impressive. I would also be fine with the CAT and probably the Cummins as well so a F-650 would also work as well. I kind of like the IH crew cab design with the amount of space, the doors and the fact they haven't made any huge changes for long periods of time. I realize the new ones look much different but for a long time that cab remained basically the same. Does IH make the entire truck for Ford to just make the frame/drivetrain and assemble the rest?

IH makes the chassis for Ford in the Blue Diamond Joint Venture plant in MX.
The 4700/4800/4900 is a better work rig than the 650/750.

The DT466 is very quiet at idle or when out on the road.

Not too quiet when they're cold. Still not bad, I'd say it's like a 12 valve Dodge in overall noise.

Surprised to hear that. Mine is much quieter than my neighbor's 12V when cold :backoff , and it gets down to 10 degrees out here.

I would tweek a few other things before ordering such a thing. Probably would spec the rear tires for something with some traction capability. I wish they had 2 speed rear axles with something like 3.50 and 4.33 as the split. I don't know if IH has a built it online but I will look. A CXT would be awefull cool though.

All that truck and you only get a 5.9? Come on.....isnt the 8.3 an option on these? I think the IH may still be close in price, plus can come with a 466 ;Sweet

HA!! That's Markinter's truck!! LOL LOL

Spec-out an '06 crewcab 4700, 300HP DTA466 and a transmission with an O/D gear. Then you'll be getting into a REAL truck. :draw

The best advantage IH has over Ford, other than it's just a better built truck, is the extensive dealer network IH has compared to Ford.

Availability of the 8.3 Cummins is sporadic on the F650/750. I think it's been discontinued. That's the diesel I'd go with in the Ford. Cat has too many problems.

Better off with IH on a new truck. If it's used, just buy the best truck for the money that's speced closest to the way you want.

BEWARE! F-650's with the C7 Cat are absolute dogs. I drive one at work (2004 F-650, 25,950 GVWR, rear airbags, 295/75R22.5 tires, 5-speed Allison), and it borders on dangerously slow, even empty. I'm also not thrilled with the cab...not a lot of storage, marginal heater, steering column too low (or wheel too big, take your pick--it's a larger diameter than an F-250/550 wheel), no adjustable-height seat belts, and the air gauge, cruise/RPM control switches, & air horn button are very poorly-located (obscured from sight by the steering wheel and/or shifter). I want an International. :(

I PM'ed Mark but haven't got back a response. He is a couple hours away. There are 3 issues with his truck though they aren't really deal killers - Mileage, Color and if I can make my Camper fit on it. I would like to see more and get some good details on it. Who knows, it may have already sold.

A very plain work truck& very uncomfortable on log trips. IH bech seats are as crude as it gets.

I would suggest finding a truck already converted to a hauler to cut down on customizing expenses. 99.8% of all IH mediums are work trucks. 95% don't even have A/C. A lot of them don't even have shock absorbers.

You need to be patient and wait for an IH hauler or keep an eye on the F-650 crewcabs as they tend to be MUCH more comfy inside-better for long towing trips. It costs a small fortune to convert a work truck into something comfy for long trips. M

Since your truck is to be used as a personal vehicle & long trip hauler, my advice is to steer clear of former work/dump trucks. They're usually stripped to the bone, have base model trannies, low HP ratings and no interior refinement or AC.
