Having thought long and hard about what amount of fuel flows thru the fuel system I thought maybe Al could do some testing. First off I would like to know what amount flows thru the injection pump return system. then what amount flows thru the injecter return line system. I'm not sure we could determine what flows thru the injecters because it burned off. Reasons for this is to know finally what amount of fuel is used as a coolant in both of these systems. I liked the fuel system cleaner Al made up and showed the flow back into the supply bottle from the combimed return system.

When you pop test injectors, is there a way to collect the fuel that is sprayed during each injection.
Maybe that could give a person a starting point in estimating that amount of fuel..???

Well I suppose this is doable, however I'm inclined to think how this can be calculated fuel burned vs amount used as coolant. That is unless I drew from one measured container and ran a timed event at known RPM and then returned to an empty measured/able container and compared.

There would be issues with pump/injector wear and so forth, however this would provide some baseline to have some idea on better than no idea I would think.

I know my truck has a worn IP and injectors I'm sure of that, however It's not like I couldn't do a second test once changed out for comparative sake as well.

It's pretty easy to know how much fuel flows through the injectors. About 4 gallons per hour at 60 mph in mine.

And if we do get some flow rates, Ill be happy to break out the heat transfer textbook and attempt to do some calculations but there are so many unknowns still it would be only a SWAG.

I don't know exactly what you want to know, but I would be interested to see what an IR camera image of both a ip running cold diesel and hot WVO would look like. My guess is indistinguishable. Although external temp doesn't necessarily equate to internal temp, but they're certainly related. I don't know how you'd measure internal temp on a functioning, running ip.

On second thought, all we really need is mass flow rate through the ip, and inlet and exit temperature. I would think the flow being returned to the tank would be much, much larger than going to the injectors, so that part could be ignored or assumed to a certain value.

Another good idea just came to me. Thats the idea about needing the fuel filter heater. When is it on and what temp does it boost the fuel too. Mostly why do we need it. I know some ahve removed it from the 7.3 heads and many 6.9 engines don't have the fuel heater. Thats the heater found in the supply line to the filter. It looks like a larger piece of tubing welded to the fuel line from the lift pump. It has one wire supplying power to it..

To determine either one of those, you have to know what the supply/lift pump pressure is, and then the volumn of flow at that pressure thru what line size is used, (supply and return) then use a % for efficience/resistance.

You could take that figure for say one (1) minute, that would be the amount of fuel used for IP cooling. The rule of thumb is 1 pint in 10 seconds thru the filter at idle speed (650 RPM) with a mechanical lift pump. IIRC, very little would be used for engine power.

Most OEM DB2 pumps are capable of 90 cc at 3200 RPM. Mel?

144 cc fuel consumed in one (1) minute, there is 3785 cc/gal.

My calc's may be all wrong, but seems to me there is plenty of fuel for cooling.

Flow from the injector return lines is going to be minimal.

Flow from the injection pump return is pretty significant, but will vary based on rpm and load. However, what I've seen is that return flow is typically ~90% of the total flow into the pump. That is, total flow is about 10 times that injected or probably around 20 gph.
