STP Oil Treatment

I had this week off work for a reciprocating compressor class, and found out something that y'all should probably know.. In the industry we are no longer allowed to use STP on anythink that has a bearing or a metal to metal surface. Kinda odd huh? Not once they explained that STP has a relatively high percentage of teflon in it, and teflon prevents metal from absorbing oil. Just a heads up.

Zinc compounds: 10%
Petroleum distillates: 30%
Mineral Oil: 60%

The only thing I would use STP for is drilling or cutting metal on a lathe. Most of those Slick additives have Teflon in it.

Somebody, maybe me, has been fed some WRONG information.

There is NO TEFLON in STP, at least not in genuine blue-bottle STP.

I have religiously used STP in many applications for years.

It is the absolute best thing to fill your vacuum pump reservoir.

It is also the best choice for oil-bath trailer hubs.

I pre-mix all of my top-off oil with 12% STP; thus, when I have to add a quart to anything, the ZDDP is already in there.

I have always added two 15-ounce bottles at every oil change.

Enough STP and you can almost make good old CI-4 rated oil out of the new CJ-4 crap.


Of course, that is just my own opinion and experience; I have no scientific data to back it up.

I could be wrong, but I do know, or am made to know that there are two types of oil additives, teflon containing and chlorinated. I was also made to believe STP was one of the teflon containing types.

Teflon = PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene. If PTFE is on the label of contents, it contains Teflon. Politicians are coated with it. Like Slick Willie.
