My steering wheel is really lose and can move it up and down previous owner had it off maybe doing the actuator any help what I can do to fix this play or could it be my steering gear box? Has alot of play side to side also the wheel does not lock when it's parked

The play varies, if it is loose in terms of the tires themselves, the steering gear can be adjust so it is tighter, there is a procedure for that. As far the steering wheel it self being loose, check the bolts that are above the steering column under the dash, there are 4, ensure they are tight. Your steering wheel not locking, that is internal and is probably broken. Do you have a tilt wheel assembly or standard assembly?

When the guy you bought it from removed it, he may have damaged it and that's why it is all sorts of goofy. I would find a new steering column assembly from a wrecking yard. They aren't to terrible to remove.

thank you I was debating whether to do that. Basically it just comes off at the joint under the hood and remove the bolts that are on the fire wall and then the 4 bolts for the ignition switch and I think she comes right out right?

Will a column from a 150 or Bronco work? And are gas and diesel the same?

You shouldn't have to remove the bolts on the firewall, that holds your brake booster and pedal assembly. If i remember right the only bolts are the 4 above the steering column under the dash and and the ones holing the egg shaped cover in your firewall. All the steering columns are the same i believe just ensure you get the SAME EXACT one. Such as cruise control or what not. The transmission shift linkage is kinda hard to remove.... When I did my transmission conversion I was tired of fighting with it so I just cut it all off haha! With enough fighting and time it will separate, just have to be patient!

Just keep an eye on this thread cause someone may know more about these columns than I do, as far as I know they can't be opened up and repaired without customization things.

It depends on what needs work. You can replace the bearings, the tilt pins, the "pot metal" rod that actually makes the ignition work. They can be rebuilt. There are a couple threads where members have rebuilt the column.

One "gotya" on columns. The 80-91 will interchange, but the wheels are different. 92-97 will not swap with the earlier columns or trucks. Also, the 92-97 F-150's have an air bag in the wheel. The column will work, the bag will not function.....

Also, the options are controlled by the horn pad, all wiring in the column is the same. There are auto and manual columns, and tilt and no tilt columns are the only differences. No difference in gasser/diesel except the F150/Bronco with the air bag.

Sounds like worn out bearings in the column. I believe they are replaceable. Both my 86 trucks have worn column bearings and slop in the wheel. The 460 truck has at least 320k miles and is very sloppy, the IDI has fewer miles and is less sloppy. I do have a manual column that is tight but I intend to put new upper and lower bearings in it before installing since it's easily accessible now. I believe LMC sells bearings, maybe someone here knows the bearing numbers so you can get something other that insanely marked up China bearings.

you can fix this, if you want to with it. its not easy, and can be a complete nightmare for the novice.
i actually have a 89 column with an auto shift sitting in my parts box.
if youre interested, pm me. the tilt seemed pretty tight when i pulled it out of my donar truck.
my truck has a zf5, and i didnt wanna mess with it.

FY!,1- 16-17 mm bolt from the column to the shaft, 5-6 10 mm bolts on the firewall cover, 2- 14 mm bolts holding the column bracket to the column support.
