Those are notjust any bolt. They have a shoulder design that keeps the hex from sinking deep into a socket. I tape the top bolt to asocket and install it that way. Takes so testing to be done without the bolt getting stuck to the socket and lost behind the starter. Also make sure the socket is taped to the extension used. They are 3/8x18 threads and the hex is smaller than normally what a 3/8 bolt uses. Its 1/2 inch instead of 9/16...

Yep. 3/8 coarse, head takes 1/2" socket, the overall length is 1.625" or the length below the head of the bolt is 1.375".

If anyone can spare a few, I need some. I'm missing one and the two that I have are crusty (came off plow truck).

Bolts with a head shape like this are called flange bolts, so you can look online for 3/8 coarse flange bolts with a 1.375 (1 and 3/8) length. Non-flathead bolts are ordered by the length of the threaded portion.

I won't swear to it, but I think that they might be standard Ford starter bolts that came out on (at least) older Ford cars and trucks.

It looks like 3/8 flange bolts are easy to find in 1.25 and 1.5 inch lengths online or even at Home Depot, but the 1.375 length is less common. I don’t know if the 1.25 length has enough threads to do the job, but you can always grind down some 1.5” bolts. If you’re going to order them I have had good luck with Bolt Depot.

The issue is with the bolt head; I'm not sure if I can find some with heads for the 1/2" socket instead of a 9/16". Thanks

You can always deal with a bolt too long...a grinder disk followed by a final dressing on the wheel makes short work of bolt too long.

Measure twice. Cut once.

Only wish I took my own advice more often...

McMaster Carr has the best selection and the worst shipping. They want $99 to ship me a packet of orings. They're the way to go if you live where FedEx delivers.

Got the bolts in from McMaster-Carr today. Just took two days for them to get here. They were about 1/32" too long, so I touched them up a bit on the grinder.
