if the oil pump is electric and it fails, would be an expensive repair as I imagine the turbo would tear up before you knew it.

Yep, but same thing as your mechanical one in your motor, you put some sort of a dummy light/buzzer or a gage on it. I would be almost tempted to make a separate oil system just for the turbo, a little reservoir and you need the pump+filter already.

What happens when you back into the lake to launch a boat or cross a creek or river, rocks flying up from gravel roads. Seems one would need a snorkel of some sort. How hot does it get pulling hard. If I am under full power with the stock trailer tied on in the pasture is this thing going to be as hot as the converter and start fires.
