i just installed a new mitsu starter in old grey. i think i overheated my stock old one. it would still crank and start the motor, but vvveryy slowly. so i'm wondering is the old starter rebuildable(after being overheated) with a regular rebuild kit from autozone? it would be nice to have a spare.

they have a kit??

you want to look at the field and armature. It may be the brushes or the commutator - these can be cleaned or replaced.

What comes with the kit?

If the windings are dark colored or it smells burnt it probably wont take a rebuild. Low battery voltage will roast a starter very quickly, tear it down and see what itlooks like and go from there. Do not put on a rebuilt solenoid they are bad news. Had too many go bad in the electric shop I worked in and almost never had a new one act up.
