Does anyone know where I can get info, diagrams, ect... on how to rebuild and modify an ip for an idi. I know i can buy one already modified for more flow for a turbo and such. I used to like to fiddle with carbs to get more out of them back in my gasser days. I want to learn more about ips, to rebuild and modify for more flow, acceleration ect... Any info or literature would be apprecitated. I have a few extra ips laying around I could start foolin with.

The parts are not the expensive part of upgrading the pump. Its the flow testing machines that will cost you. These pumps are no way like a gas carb. The tolerances are closer than 1/2 thousands and just a fingerprint will ruin them. Anybody can take them apart but the calibration is very important. Even taking off the top cover can destroy your motor if you do it wrong. The fuel shutoff is located in there and if its not installed correctly when you start up the motor it will run away without any way to shut it off. These motors run because the fuel is supplied to them. When the shutoff isn't working the motor just keeps reving up till something fails. The governor wont stop it because its controled by the injection upmp in the same area of the shutoff. So its off to the races and you running from an over reving motor. Anybody that takes off the cover is told to have a piece of metal or wood that can be placed over the intake mainfold intake. This is the only way to shut down a runaway motor. Don't think you could just thru some shop rag at the intake to the turbo either. That has so much suction it will pull it in and also destory the turbo. Then your motor eats metal and gees.... We get to rebuilt or sell. Its your choice..... Please be careful in the injection pump. Like you, I like to tinker with things too....:D

I would just like to see some diagrams and specs, so I'll understand more how the fuel injection actually works. Would help me to find ways to make my truck run better. Dont want to spend $1000.00 every 80000 miles or so in new ips and injectors, if it is just replacing wear parts and checking tollerances. Would just like to do some experimenting. plus i like foolin with things.

Your best bet it is to ask around and get a spare pump from somebody for nothing or cheap, and take it apart. That's what we did at last years IDI Weekend in Chattanooga. Until you have one apart, it's hard to understand what it does or how it does it. There are quite a few little parts, and more adjustments than you might imagine, with one adjustment affecting the other, so it gets very complicated. There is not a lot of info on the web about these pumps, but what little I have found is often on GM 6.2 or 6.5 boards, as their DB2 is very much like ours.

A guy on here who goes by the handle "Dieseldummy" has built one for a 6.5 TD. I bet if you IM him he'd be willing to tell you what he has discovered. Icanfixall's cuations do apply when working with a pump...any major problem with the build could ruin the pump or the motor. I nearly killed my engine by having the pump cover off and bending the FSS linkage. You can also stall a runaway engine by killing the fuel supply. I wish I would have been able to stall mine quicker cause I'm sure the EGTs were pretty high as there was A TON of smoke and it baked soot onto my dad's Isuzu pup which was sitting next to it. No idea if it hurt it or not. No problem experimenting, just be sure to be careful and have fun, plus if you put it on the engine have some other way besides the key/FSS to stall the motor before something breaks.

Thanks for the info, Just trying to get away from the parts changer mentality. A true hot rodder, diesel or gas, should understand how and why something goes fast. Not just stand looking in wonder at a bunch of assembled parts, thinking dang thats fast but I wonder why? I've been reading alot about diesels, and know there is killer potential for hotrodding.

I'm all for understanding "what goes on" but keep in mind you're messing with something that will do some serious damage to your motor if it isn't handled right. There's room for improvement, but bear in mind the IDI is near it's design limits unlike a cummins 12v. I'll post the p/n for the IH publication for tearing down a pump when I get back to my shop this evening or tomorrow. Go knock yourself out and don't come back telling that "you should have been warned"

On a very serious note.... The powerstrokes run an injection upmp that puts out 20,000 to 40,000 lbs of diesel fuel pressure and uses an electronic injector. If you could increase the pressure of our systems for the idi it would make more power but making it live very long is the problem. Our injectors pop at around 2000 lbs and the pumps put out about 5000 lbs as I recall. I may be off on the pump pressure but you get the idea. More pressure... Fuel atomizes better and we can use injectors modified to work with higher pressures.

I aint gonna dive right in and put one on my engine I'm already fixin to spend about $4000.00 on, but I am curious as how they work. If I blow anything up I will only blame myself. I plan on using either a DPS Turbo Ip or maybe a Diesel Care Turbo IP. I'm not gonna ginea pig this motor!

I will caution you about Diesel Care. Members have bought his "stuff" and had nothing but trouble with it. Even told one member he installed it all wrong and blamed him for it leaking fuel out the top cover. Gees... Nobody opens the top cover to install a pump. When the cover was removed rust was found inside and the o-ring gasket smashed in two causing the leak. They are not a company I will or have had any dealings with. You on the other hand may just be a lucky buyer and not have any problems but at leak you know what your possibley going to be dealing with.
