Pulling engine, Transmission support?

Getting ready to yank the engine on my '92 f350.

What's the best way to support the front of the tranny ( zf5) while pulling the engine out on these things.

I'm pulling the radiator core support out right now , so it looks like the engine is coming out basically straight forward for the most part.

Will it come out that way, or am I going to need to drop the tail of the tranny to clear the engine crossmember?

I just put a block of wood on the floor-jack and let the bell-housing sit on that.

if all your doing is pulling the engine,why are you removeing the core support?there is no need to remove the core support to remove the engine.all you need to do is turn the engine to one side you lift it up while pulling it forward.

I just don't want to have to fuss with it up that high and it's just easier to get to everything now. It's a bit of a pain to get it off, but I'll take that over having to crawl all around to get to things on the engine. I don't bend very well these days.

If the vehicle is not going to be moved I use a piece of wood cut to length, jack stand, chain or rope around the frame rails especially if it is going to be moved.

Turn it sideways??? Never had to do this but mabye the '92s are different. I just take the fan off.

Remove oil filter first or it will hang on the cross member.

every one ive done i had to turn the motor to one side to clear the radiator support and heater box

And the starter hung up on the pass/side engine mount.

Yup, just did my '93 a while ago, and definately had to turn the engine.

Gotta tell ya, it's pretty freaky with that much weight hanging up that high. We opted to leave the engine hangin' there, and pull the truck up underneath it rather than try to move the engine stand.

I used a ratchet strap doubled across under the tranny(E4OD) from frame to frame to hold it up with the engine out, and then of course bottle jacks to adjust when putting the engine in. Don't forget,to allow for when you lower the weight in there(or lift it out) the springs will travel up/down some 4-6 inches!

why?
because I like my back not hurting.
Even though my engine picker is either a conventional towtruck or a forklift, I like the fact I am not bent over the radiator support fighting with the nuts and bolts. On my last swap, the ATS turbo up pipe fought with me, so I lifted the cab to clear the turbo assy.

Here are som pics of my transmission support I made.It allows me to move the truck or whatever I need to do while the engine is out.I used a block of wood to adjust the height to the same height as it is while the engine is in.
Another note -after several engine changes I came to the conclusion the if I take the motor mounts off the block,and off the frame(completly out of the truck) it would be easier-It was!!! I thought it would be hard to remove the mounts.but by lifting the engine a little after I unbolted the mounts from the front crosmember they slid out very easy.Finding the right combination of wrenches was a little challanging -but was easy to bolt in after I found the right wrench combo. It made lining up the bell housing a snap.After about 6 engine changes on these type trucks I would never do it again with out completly removing the mounts.

The only manual I pulled the core support was broke on both sides(almost every one does) so I just brought it out the radiator hole.
