Yeah, the first video sounds like mine, but it's definitely not that bad outside the truck. There is just a slight metallic growl from mine.

I swear that sounds like the noise reverberating off/through an exhaust pipe.

I've been over it a thousand times. The noise is 100% rollover noise from the trans. It goes away completely when the clutch pedal is depressed. It's a Sachs HD clutch with a Sachs SMF. It drives great, only makes noise at neutral in idle. It's running 4qts of ATF with 1/2 quart Lucas oil stabilizer. Idle is set at 850-900 rpm now, with no change. The current plan is to run it a while and see what I get.

I'd thinking I should switch back to a DMF setup.

You might want to try overfilling the trans. If I remember right, I have 2 gallons of Royal Purple ATF in mine per a recommendation from someone on here.

Everybody I know runs 30 wt motor oil in the zf to quiet it down. It helps a lot but I don't think they where ever that loud to begin with

I tried 50w Synthetic Royal Purple in mine briefly, it worked EXCELLENT in quieting the trans, sounded like stock actually. But here, with my worn out trans and the cold temperatures, it slowed my shifting down. I'm sure with it being warmer there and a fresh trans it would work fine. Otherwise I just run 4Qts of regular ATF. On the last clutch, I ran 6 Qts.

Did you try removing the dust cover? I can't even install mine, it grinds on the ring gear.
I would like to see the install. Can you get pictures or video of both sides of the trans looking up at the motor? I'd like to see the exhaust.

FYI, the DMF DOES an EXCELLENT job of masking noises, that's WHY it's there. One of your injectors could have failed, how old are they?

Come to think of it, that almost reminds me of what mine sounded like for the first 500 Miles or so after I did the SMF conversion the first time. I can't remember if I added fluid or if it just quieted down. How many miles did you put on the last one before condemning it?

That really sounds horrible but.. To point you in the direction of the noise is impossible for me. Whats the mileage on the pump and injecters. Thats just a wag at this point too. Odd how it goes away when you press the clutch. Might try jacking up one side of the truck to twist the frame. See if the noise changes. then twist up the other side. Might be easier to roll the right or left tire up on a tall curb to twist the frame too. If it makes you feel any better I too have a growl in my trig at a no load but in gear going down the rod sound. It almose sounds like a turbo wheel rubbing. When Mel rode with me at the 2009 rally he said it was the ac so he turned it off. The sound went away. Well I can still make the sound ac on or off. Mine is definitely a metalic noise vibrating. Sometimes it sounds like a spinning motor that starts to get into that critical rpm where it resonates and comes to a stop..

Guys, I appreciate you all taking the time to weigh-in on this, but it is without a doubt caused by rollover and the noise comes from within the transmission.

There is no interference between the body and the transmission. I've checked. The trans is overfilled a bit, by about 1.5 quarts, with no change to the noise. Inspection cover was removed because it hit the ring gear (as suggested by Jrad235). I clearanced it with a heavy ball-peen and installed without issue. It's no longer hitting there.

Remember, this all started when I installed that clutch last February. The old trans sounded exactly the same as the new trans, no change there. The only thing that changed with the new trans was my ability to use 2nd gear. The noise absolutely goes away when I press the clutch, and although you can't hear in the videos, I can hear the trans internals slow down and stop making noise when I press the clutch pedal. If I slip into neutral as I roll to a stop, there is no noise until the tailshaft of the trans stops when the truck stops. If it's in motion due to the spinning driveshaft, there is no noise. 2wd/4wd doesn't matter.

It's certainly possible I have an issue with pump/injectors, but the truck runs too good for me to think that is the case, and the noise started immediately after installing the SMF clutch. I'd have to look at my records, but I don't have more than 30k on the pump or injectors I'm pretty sure.

I have less than 1000 miles on the SMF conversion, and 800 or so of that was highway miles pulling the trailer back from Albuquerque in February. Not many in-town miles to "break in" the springs in the disc of this clutch. I inspected the throwout bearing again when I installed the trans last Saturday- it's fine.

I don't mean to discard all your suggestions, but I do this for a living. I'm field technical specialist for Toyota Motor Sales. I know my way around vehicles. The reason I'm here is that everyone tells me rollover noise is normal, and I insist that my noise is NOT normal. What I can't wrap my head around is that my truck makes so much more noise than any others I've heard. I absolutely understand the role the DMF played in covering up these noises, and regret not just replacing my disc and pressure plate. Unfortunately, my old flywheel is long gone or I'd have switched back in an effort to diagnose this issue.

Ive tried 2 different single mass flywheels, and 2 different transmissions now with no change.

Merry Christmas and thanks again for all the suggestions. Ill try to provide photos as suggested by Jrad235 this afternoon.

Merry Christmas to you as well! I forgot to ask, even though I'm sure you covered it, but what happens when you add throttle in neutral? say, 1200 RPM? The noise should vanish, correct? (I'm still thinking, this is just one tangent.)

Yes, anything over 1000 rpm is good. I raised the idle a bit and it's tolerable but still sounds pretty gravelly.

Mine has no noise of any kind coming from the tranny after my zf swap, I figured there would be some.
