Is this worth what he wants? I dont need it, just curious.

The first year block was prone to cracking if I am correct. I'd say if he had the block magnafluxed and tanked its probably a home run. My long block was $3100 and rebuilt turbo was $600. I spent another $800 or so on the install. That seems like a good deal, especially if the guy has a pile of receipts to back up his claims.

Might get the block serial numbers to really make sure what year the block is. Clearly the seller has no idea about the easy to crack first id blocks. I see the seller has upgraded the fuel filter head to the 7.3 model but still has the 6.9 fuel heater inline too. The 7.3 fuel heater is not connected. Depending on what brand parts were used this might be a great deal. No mention of any other machining either. Its a tuff call to buy it and run it od tear it down and do it the way you want it like studs...

If he had documentation on all the work and parts and it was done by a reputable shop, maybe. It's certainly less that what you'd pay to have the same work done, but on the other hand you have no warranty and no idea who worked on it, nor where the parts came from. And it's probably the least desirable block. It's also missing the tach pickup.

At the end of the day it's worth what someone will pay for it... I'd bet he'll find someone to pay that eventually. Personally I wouldn't, but that's just me.

I have the same unsupported dipstick tube, available only on 1985 and earlier. Like the others said, if there are receipts for any of the work and parts, it is a decent deal. If not, he just cleaned it off and painted it. The turbo may be shot, too, if the engine needed a rebuild.

Everyone keeps saying how easily the 83 blocks crack, but has anyone actually had a block crack on them wihout using the block heater? And what is magnaflux?

What I know about block cracking is that it's predominantly related to block heater use on mid 85 and earlier blocks. Also the very early 83 blocks were weaker in several areas and used different heads (precups) and injectors. Not sure how much of a negative that is though.

The one piece dipstick is also a characteristic of pre 85 blocks, though is very easy to change.

Also, the pre mid 85 blocks used pressed in oil jets which add about $400 to the rebuild cost, or at least did as of ~5 years ago. The late ones are bolt in and can be reused. Early ones you have to replace and they're only available from the dealer at ~$50 each!

Good point, have to keep things in perspective. rebuilt 7.3s out here are running upwards of $4000.

If he"s telling the truth, that is a smoking deal. My redneck rebuild cost me over $1,000.!

It would be nice to see it running tho. You should be able to do a compression test with it sitting on the stand.
It would be nice to know the story too.
