Need ideas on oil cooler

Either way though I haven't had any issues with the back part leaking. I'm getting a sanding block and I'll try and sand the surfaces a little smoother and then put everything back. I may try not snugging the front bolts as tight. Both times I've taken the gasket back off the silicone sealer bead on the gaskets looked like it had been compressed.. I guess the bigger front bolts are allowing me to over tighten.

Bolt torque is based on the diameter of the bolt. The bolt size and the size of wrench to fit the head are different. All the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI oil coolers use 3/8" bolts for front and 5/16" bolts for rear.

Ah okay my apologies then. I was going by the size socket I was using. I've been working on this too long :dunno

I PERSONALLY WOULD NOT USE silicone for that particular applicaton. The chance for small ****** berries to dislodge and become trapped in the cooler would IMHO not be worth the risk.

Elephant snot...yup thats the sealant I would use for this application. A light coating on the header install gasket to header allow dry some...then light coating on block a d place cooler a d gently tighten to torque specs X patern

Elephant Snot, huh? Good thing we have a zoo right across the river because I have to do this also, tomorrow. Does the elephant have to have a cold or do they make snot all of the time? Our elephants stay pretty healthy, so I hope it's not a problem.. Oh wait, do you mean Elephant Snot® the graffiti remover, elephant snot the canned tire inflator/sealant, or elephant snot the green jelly like lube for wire pulling? Does the elephant snot you refer to have any other name it may be known by? Even a manufacturer, maybe I could look at their product line and try to figure it out.:rolleyes:;Really

I'm late in this, but thought I would pass along my "tech tip" for making sure I had flat mating surfaces.

Sheet of glass, like a glass coffee table top [send SHMBO out shopping, or something] Clean it really good so there is no bumps .. spray it with a spray bottle of plain water, and lay down a sheet of 3M wet or dry sanding paper 400 grit. [wet glass will make the paper stick flat to it. Spray the full sheet of wet or dry sanding paper so it's wet also. You now have as dead flat a surface as you can find short of a machine shop surface plate.

Place the part you wish to re-surface on the wet sand paper and start moving it in a figure 8 pattern, while paying attention to holding the surface square to the paper. Light even pressure is all you need. keep spraying water to "float the part" and then, check the surface.. right away, if you have high/low spots the highs will start to show.

When it feels and looks like the grit on the paper is starting to "load up" take the sheet of sand paper to the sink and wash the grit side.. rinse off the back side.. put it back on the sheet of glass and grind/polish some more till you have a full flat surface.

The figure 8 pattern will keep you from tipping the part to one side or the other like you will trying to do straight line sanding.

I've found this much more reliable than trying to use a flat file, unless the surface already has huge nicks that have to be flattened with a file first.. even then.. I finish sand the mating surface to get a good seal.

Use advanced search ...keyword elephant snot and my user name....

Search is key here it works well...

Or try avaiation gasket sealer by permatex...

In all likely hood its posted here maybe 50 60 times so ya try search...

Alright guys pleased to say I got the issue fixed and everything is running good without leaks. Turns out that I loosened the top bolt on the thermostat pipe (I think that's what it's called) a few weeks ago during tear down and forgot to tighten. I didn't catch it last night because I spilled water when filling radiator so the area was already wet. Saw it as soon as it started leaking today. DOH moment for sure.

Anyways another question.. Before I rr'd the oil cooler I did fuel work a few weeks ago and I think I had some nasty fuel which plugged the filter. I replaced and when I started her up today it ran for about 45 minutes before it sputtered and shut off again. Obviously that signifies air getting into the IP/ injectors, but if it were sucking air from somewhere prior to the lift pump, shouldn't it have cut out and died faster than 45 minutes? (I haven't pulled the second fuel filter off yet as its pouring down rain..just wondering how fast a fuel filter can clog.) Just trying to get idea before I go get another fuel filter.

i would say that you have pick up issues.
45 min before it died, i would immediately check fuel level,
and obstructions before fuel filter.
or even a lift pump....

for future diagnostic i would install a fuel pressure gauge at the exit of the filter.
this helps ALOT! and will give you better instructions.

in my unprofessional opinion, this is a must have, for the cost.

I'm going to check the tank levels in the morning, but I'm not sure if it's a pick up issue or not. The truck was feeding off the rear tank which was full of diesel when I started it up.. Maybe a piece of the rubber hose I stuck on it got sucked to the side of the tank. Also, the lift pump was replaced just before I got the truck so unless a dud was installed I wouldn't think that would be an issue. Can I connect the fuel gauge to the Schrader valve on the filter housing or should it be inline where the hose leaves the housing? I guess ill have to pay autozone a visit to see if they have one.

you can connect it there, but you want a schrader valve, i have mine T-d into the outgoing fuel line.

Aviation Gasket Sealer by Permatex! Oh, THAT elephant snot... Yeah, I figured since I found it in about 30 seconds with the others I described previously. I guess my point is that I had to stop and search for something that is a slang term, known to some but unknown to most others. Many times when I'm perusing OB and get to the end of a page, I see that I'm the only member looking at the page, but there are two or three guests looking also, who are probably not as well versed in the trade lingo as even myself- which isn't saying a lot. All that I know I learned here (Thanks everyone!) but to be honest, I had not run across "elephant snot" before, although I have seen Permatex Gasket Sealer (and even have some). Thanks for clearing it up though.;Sweet

Gasgacinch is great for sealing, too. Not elephant snot, but very effective and very fast if used properly.
