The mod is to use the DMF as a SMF instead of replacing it. DMF are either very expensive or unavailable or unreliable, so some think it is simpler to reuse it without the springs and other damping materials, and deal with the vibration of the diesel only by the clutch disc.
As I understand it, the DMF was used to keep transmissions from early failure due to the power pulses that are so violent in diesel engines. Maybe the factory over did it, I don't know. But several people who have either done the mod or changed to SMF are happy with the results.
I still think it is OK to let the hydraulics do the shifting. I have all C6 transmissions and don't have to worry about the lucky mod. Yet.
