The mod is to use the DMF as a SMF instead of replacing it. DMF are either very expensive or unavailable or unreliable, so some think it is simpler to reuse it without the springs and other damping materials, and deal with the vibration of the diesel only by the clutch disc.

As I understand it, the DMF was used to keep transmissions from early failure due to the power pulses that are so violent in diesel engines. Maybe the factory over did it, I don't know. But several people who have either done the mod or changed to SMF are happy with the results.

I still think it is OK to let the hydraulics do the shifting. I have all C6 transmissions and don't have to worry about the lucky mod. Yet.

I've got just over 13k miles on my lucky mod. No problems so far.

You can get a lucky modded flywheel resurfaced, just like any single mass flywheel. But it has to be bolted together first to make it a single mass and not a dual mass.

the dual mass was so the trans would be QUIET at idle/low speeds, mybuddy sold fords when these came out and it had nothing to do with trans life.
trucks are supposed to be noisy, damn sissies.

Is it possible to resurface a dual mass flywheel after locking it up with bolts? or do you generally just scuff it up/deglaze and run it with a fresh disk?

I don't see any reason why the bolted flywheel could not be setup on a grinder and surfaced. But I found no reason to surface mine after I bolted it together, and it works fine.
