loud motor concerns

my buddy just picked up a low mile 7.3 e4od dully 350 former state truck cc utility bed
but it sounds like a chipped up psd lots of motor rattle and almost like theres a 2inch single pipe exhaust you can hear it flowing fast at idle also the short drive he had with it it seemed underpowered im thinking an ip issue cause the diesel noise seems top of motor it was dark so i didnt look too far into it but... what you guys think

Way Advanced timing can make them sound like powerstrokes, far enough advanced and you can loose power.

im check the marks and maybe pull him down to the rally and have mel go at it

you know ive whitnessed that in my truck too i was cruisin at 70 one weekend to go pick up an engine and all of a sudden it sounded like it didnt have a drop of oil in it so i let off and accelerated again and it stopped? im not sure what it is but isnt grey smoke or blue smoke mean its timed to advanced because mine is a mixture with blue and grey but it rolls it bad but the economy hasnt changed one bit so we might be seeing the same problems

idk but timing is what im thinking if so i dont have a meter so he'll wait till the rally but its sure weird i actually had to double check it was an idi after he started it

Pendot truck? low mile, high hour as all they do is sit in em and idle j/k, sort of.

where did he get it from?

local ford junkyard the yard owner got like 20 idis in the yard
but ya high hour low mile so thats another reason for a bad pump
